I am not denying there is a concentration of top talent (as in successful by the usual metrics, and high IQ) in top schools. But we also often forget that there is a proportion of students in RI/HCI also failing their tests - and there are also casualties for the final A levels. Please don't take it as a given that being in a top school is an assurance of strong final results. In the same way, there are students in Poly, in non-top JCs who eventually do very well for the final exams. It isn't deterministic.

In a way, I am very heartened to see that education in Singapore remains as a 'social leveller' for lack of a better or a more appropriate terms. We all know there are students with lots of tuitions but still perform average academically. Others can go to top school without tuitions. It’s really case by case and no one size fit all. Understand the child, work toward the child’s strength, accept/mitigate the child’s weakness. It’s may sound cliche, just try the best and see where it lead the child to. Remember to factor in enough rest and leisure too. It is during sleep when what we learn in the day get etch deeper into our mind. Our minister of education says good mental health is the important foundation where the rest of our learning is built upon.

Listen to your child too, especially when they are older. My children qualified for these 2 institutions after PSLE but we opted for O level instead. After O level they decided themselves this time they want to take up the challenge and they enrolled into these 2 schools. It is more sustainable if the child is motivated too.

I have been telling others I don’t thinking getting into top school would mean job is done for life. There is still a long road ahead where we will face my challenges in life. Not getting into top school would not mean setback. I am sure all of us see many people around us leading quality life even when they are not from top schools. I have heard burn out lawyers switch to bakery; or throw the law certificate toward parents after completing law degree and move on to do the things he really likes instead of practicing law
just bcos the parents want him to. I think it is ok to aspire to top schools so long it does not cost you an arm or leg, because in the grand scale of life, it may not be worthwhile.

My suggestion is don’t be pre occupied with academic matters too early for the child. Childhood is important too.

bbbay

Reply to All About PSLE AL Scoring System on Sat, 09 Mar 2024 10:48:13 GMT

Hi any parents whose child get into HCI or RI?

How many tuition do your child have?
