Crocodile cup is not the usual competition whereby school can only nominate the top 2 players in the school for each category P1&P2 / P3&P4 / P5&P6. In addition for this year due COVID many school pull out of the competition which explain why the number is so low. For those really competitive kids they are training 7 days a week non - stop, it is a huge commitment both physically, mentally and financially demanding for the full 6 years of primary school from the parent. Although it is always good to try out as many sports as possible unless you are thinking of using it as DSA than all these consideration come in, it is a very competitive environment. It can get very boring & repetitive once your kids are going competitive, the training is no longer that fun but coaches here (mainly from China) are doing drilling to perfect one move/one stroke day in and day out. Interest is very important to sustain the 6 years journey and more if using it as DSA.

ZJK

Reply to DSA 2020 - NUSH on Wed, 24 Nov 2021 06:36:37 GMT

kiasu_pig\" post_id=\"2047739\" time=\"1637733342\" user_id=\"4726:

DS2 was accepted into his 1st choice secondary school via DSA (basketball). For other friends with kids in sota via visual arts, I think they are coping very well, their psle score hovers around 25x so I think not an issue coping with the IB syllabus. Few years back there were some saga regarding management in the sch focusing on acad and second placing arts and many arts tchrs left as a result. Try it out for a few months and decide the next step. If they don’t like it, expose them to other sports or activities.

Go in with the mindset of exposure, rather than with DSA as the end goal.

Both of my kids are girls and for the local competition conducted last December crocodile which is a major national competition up for age 11-12 is only 48 girls participating which is a major competition for it . Age 7-8 I think only 29 girls competing. So if each good sec school take in 4-5 , I think the chances are quite high. That is why I am considering to let my girls enrol to this Alps Table Tennis academy . See which parent let their kids go Table Tennis and hear their feedback

“Only” 48 girls participated but the reality is, do u think the top secondary schools will take all 48 of them? They are only interested in scouting out the top few talents. Usually the 3 medal winners, or the finalists. The rest, they don’t want. How reasonable do u think it is for your kids to climb all the way to the top few spots by the time they are 11-12 years old? That is something u have to weigh.

It is going to be a long hard slog of 6 years (if u start now) and your child may not even agree to it. The training can get repetitive and tiring, not to mention the fierce fights at each round of competition moving upwards.

Plenty of kids (and parents) burn out along the way. And bear in mind everybody out there has a similar plan as you.

Your time and money may be better spent elsewhere. If learn for fun it’s ok but with DSA as a goal, too unachieveable a plan.

zac's mum

Reply to DSA 2020 - NUSH on Wed, 26 May 2021 05:12:23 GMT

Yes totally I agree .
