The prices are really different though...even with the same UMF level.

TIA!

Hi Andaiz,

Organic Honey...hmm. There is so much grey matter around organic qualifications in general and as far as I know, there is an industry shakeup on the horizon in NZ.

Now if you apply organics to honey, one must consider how do you get organic honey? Honey is one of the last natural sources of food that still exists in a world increasingly more dependant on production based or factory farmed food in any case.

So without falling into the whole discussion of organic qualifications or processed foods consider this. If a bee can fly 3-6km how can an apiarist guarantee that his bees are on crops that are organic? Also consider that the Manuka Bush is a native tree. It is all organic. The risk can be that the native bush the bees are harvesting is located next to a farm using herbicides or pesticides but this is low risk if you know the lay of the land in NZ.

The Manuka bush is hard on bees so apiarist like to force them onto the Manuka bush as it is not the bees natural crop and the bees have to work harder. This generally means the more isolated the Manuka the better or the bees will harvest other species of crop. Most large Manuka bush blocks are fairly remote to commercial crops.

I find the claim of organic Manuka a marketing exercise and the aim is to possibly widen profit margins but I will definitely research this deeper with the beekeepers association in NZ and keep you posted.

At the heart of it, I still cannot contemplate how you control what a bee will farm and where - given their ability to travel quite far from the hive if they are not satisfied with their harvest.

All Honey is great for you (as long as the bees are not overfed with sugar syrup) Manuka Honey differentiates itself due to MGO, Methylglyoxal. A chemical compound which remains highly bioactive within Manuka Honey vs other Honey.

I use a range of Manuka products for my family - not just honey. Particularly great for abrasions and wounds which are a regular occurrence for my kids given their active lifestyles and sporting interests. Lots of great research papers on this from bio-chemist the late Peter Molon MBE whom discovered MGO.

\"Its bio-actives make it a unique healer with naturally occurring enzymes that give it superior antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. This occurs when enzymes produce hydrogen peroxide.\"

quote reference: https://www.myplanetnatural.com/this-is-why-luxury-natural-skincare-includes-manuka-honey-in-2019/

Make no mistake Honey and Manuka Honey is great for you! The product of an insect (yes bees are insects if you didn't know) harvesting flowers it can only be good for you.

Shaner

Reply to Manuka Honey on Thu, 30 Aug 2018 04:35:10 GMT

Manuka Honey has more vitamins, minerals and amino acids than ordinary honey. It also contains far more healing properties than other types of honey. When taken orally, Manuka Honey is effective in treating conditions such as stomach aches, stomach ulcers, sore throats, strep throat, acid reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, etc. Manuka Honey can also be used topically on the skin to treat conditions such as infected wounds, burns, blisters, eczema, ringworm, acne, etc. There are skin care products available that contain Manuka Honey that are more user friendly than using pure Manuka honey on the skin to avoid the stickiness.
