<![CDATA[Kumon - Discussion]]>Original Title: Kumon Hougang Central/ Hougang Serangoon


Hi,

Wonder if any parents here have kids in these centres and could advise which is better. Recently, a friend was telling me that her son used to attend the branch at jurong and it took him 4-5 months just to move 1 level. However when she shfited to bukit batok, her son has since moved a few levels in a year. So I've a feeling that each kumon branch differs.

My son is currently at Roxy Square branch and read in one of the postings that it is one of the better kumon branch in Spore. He is there as it is near my mum's house and as he is in K2, she helps me to bring him for his lessons.

But in 2009, he will be in P1 and no longer staying over at my mum's place, for logistics purpose, I need to move to a branch closer us where maid/pils can help to bring him for lessons. I am having serious thots as his teachers at roxy knows his learning pattern and they've sort of establish a rapport esp recently where he was alot more motivated. Though roxy is not \"too far\" but given the schedule of other classes on weekends which is sort of back to back and centre schedule to take note of, I prefer something that is practical.

May I know if it is still useful ? Kids are getting busier in upper primary , wondering if time should be spent on other enrichment as finding Kumon less relevant. Appreciate some advice.

Can you pls share which stage did your DD start with and which stage is she currently in now? Do you think Kumon is suitable and beneficial to young children? Thanks in advance

Hi Baby JB,
Since my DD started early, she is in more advanced level than her peers now doing the multiplication at K1. I don't remember which stage she started off. Probably the lowest ones. The best thing about Kumon is how they instil strong perseverance spirits in my child.

Thanks for sharing...... But hubby is against my idea of putting my DD3 into Kumon. The \"teachers\" in the centre are all very young as they are completers from that centre. Hubby had no trust to leave my DD3 in their hands and Kumon have lots worksheets to complete. He think that itis too stressful for young children and it may kill their interest in completing future homeworks in Primary school later. They dont do make up lessons, if cant attend just collect worksheets home to do. Another concern is once they enter primary school, what they taught is not in line with MOE syllabus. Hence, may have to look for another suitable enrichment lessons. So i am actually looking at MPM Maths amd hope other KS parents can advise or share more about it? Cheers

I heard there is a similar math concepts of learning and coaching arriving in Singapore from Korea/Japan.

Its called PlayFACTO School .Any mommies heard of them?

They have been very successful in Korea, Japan in creatively coaching and guiding mathematics and concepts in a fun way. Not sure if any mommies have seen them? My friends in Korea told me they are very very effective and fun to learn too. Children love it. Cant wait to try it out once they come in. Understand from their web that they are beginning in Toa Payoh. Anyone knows about them more details?

i believe my child is hyperactive, and many a times disturbs the class. The teacher is not happy too. she likes to control by shouting, which i explained to her that it will not help for more than few minutes.
I would like to change the school and try with some other teachers which are patient and innovative and new environment.
Do any of you have good experience in any kindergarten at West Coast or Jurong East with Hyperactive kids?

The methodology just build the habit to do exercises everyday and let kid to remember through repeat. Tutor’s coaching skill is so important while the tutor we have been assigned even cannot find the error of addition within 10 several times. What a waste time…the class cannot make up even is MC.
