I call it enrichment centre. I suppose you can also call it tuition centre. I don't think there is a commonly agreed distinction.

i think enrichment center e.g. chinese enrichment centers don't focus on school syllabus.. just teach things e.g. story telling and hv fun

in context of math enrichment centers, some are like that too.. don't focus on moe syllabus.. aim to increase social skills/confidence.

Not sure why you have this impression. I sent my DS to TLL Maths lessons from middle of P4, he benefited tremendously from the lessons there. He continued with them till PSLE and did well. He is in Sec school now, no longer attending any external lessons.

really!! can share with me how are lessons conducted and whether they are in line with MOE curriculum/techniques?

there are some 'unorthodox' techniques that a child can use to get to the answer quickly but the schs don't approve..

enrichment classes typically don't benefit the kids in terms of results improvement..

maybe confidence or public speaking etc..

wanna find out from you -
1. what makes a good enrichment center? do you expect results improvement? e.g. i send my child to a math enrichment class in the East but her results are not improving. how?

2. will you check your child to an enrichment center if she's in p4-6 where exams are important.. what is the best age to send them for enrichment in your opinion?

I understand your dilemna but if I am you i will put my child's interest before academic results because results cannot happen without interest.

yah i understd im sacrificing long term interest for short term gain - she's p4 now and i wanna make sure she can do well in psle..

good idea - i will speak to them.. my daughter's weakness is in prob sums.. she's improved alot in mcqs and short ans from math monkey's training.. just that prob sums really are heavy weightage.

im just curious - am i the only one to expect results improvement from enrichment centers? or should i be looking at other things e.g. attitude change instead?

my girl is practising papers, learning short cuts but not conventional problem sums… thats why while she counts faster, and does mental math much better, she still doesn’t do well at problem sums.


in a conventional tuition center, she will be forced to practice problem sums, hence improve. this is a math enrichment center which aims to teach other things… that’s why.

hmm ok i think the point is i have limited time and resources, so should i


1. take her out even though she enjoys it - and checks her into a MOE-aligned center so that her results improves, or

2. continue the status quo even if her results may not change…??

my 10 year old daughter is in this enrichment center

she has been in it since half a year ago.. basically before she entered the program, she hated math.. now she started enjoying math, BUT her school results have not seen any improvement.

I understand why - the center program is not MOE-aligned.

if u were me, will you pull her out of this class? and enrol her into say, Kumon which drills her in math?

Im worried about her results. at the same time i fear that it will kill her interest in math even if her grades improve.. grades, or interests.. what would u do if u were me?

p.s: i have another 7 year old son who hates math. he is in this center and he loves it. His interest in math has increased many times - i just don't know if I should continue this for him.

p/s: my dd's results have improved greatly over time at this time of writing, contrary to what i earlier wrote... im deeply grateful to this center and will continue to recommend it to everyone.. (refer to my last post for why)
