Came across this Singapore Education Pathways website recently and I think it is quite useful for parents. Most of the information is already available from MOE, but it is usually scattered across different websites, PDFs and forum discussions. This site puts things together in one place and makes it more relevant to your own child. You can enter your child’s PSLE score or current grades and see which secondary schools, poly courses, JCs or ITE courses may be realistic. I also like the feature that works backwards from a target course and shows the grades your child would need. The subject combination planner may also be helpful for Sec 2 students, since subject choices can affect future options. Of course, I would still verify important information with MOE or the school, as cut-off points can change every year. Some features are also paid. Overall, I see it as a useful planning tool for parents and children to discuss their options, rather than something that should make the final decision for them.

@sharonkhoo That must’ve been a really interesting/life-changing experience for both your girls, to live and study in cross-cultural settings! Our fam has always been based in SG, but our family network is diverse. I’m Chinese, my husband is Indian, and the extended family includes fam members who are Malay, Romanian, and so on. My SIL’s family migrated to NZ many years ago. And some of our closest friends are single, or in same-sex partnerships. In short, there are plenty of different perspectives for my kiddos to draw upon! But going back to the book: I think academics and school routines/requirements can be very overwhelming for many parents in SG, hence the need to talk about it all the time! I also wonder if some had been very disciplined and well-behaved when young. I certainly wasn’t, which makes it very easy to view my kids in a glowing light Personally, I’ve always said that ver 2.0 is far better!

My husband’s family is more of “let’s share our troubles and joys”… but as an observer, what I see is that people are more often weighed down by one another, than lifted up. My husband’s aunt visited us two weeks ago. She’s almost 60, and she remarked that she felt she had aged so much over the last 10 years. And yes, many things happened on their side. From bigger problems like financial irresponsibility, to daily communication habits that stir negativity more often than foster closeness. For me, I keep myself very busy and try to avoid “hasslers” as best as I can! It can be very challenging to hold boundaries, especially in close-knit Asian families.
