      Hi xxjustakidxx,

Thank you for your consensus. haha!

Since tmr is the CCA Extravaganza, I'd just want to comment a little bit on CCAs. I've realized that in recent years, students have been choosing CCAs on the basis of maximising the CCA points that they can attain from the CCA points system known as LEAPS (\"Leadership, Enrichment, Achievement, Participation, Service\"). As such, when it comes to Upper Secondary level, students gradually lose interest in their CCAs, with some students even changing their CCAs halfway through, thereby losing their CCA points.

In my opinion, it is very important that one choose CCAs based on one's interest/passion rather than CCA points (although that may be a pragmatic approach) because it is interest/passion that keeps one going.

The following can be achieved with the following types of CCAs:
Performing Arts - Pursuit of interest in music, arts dance; cultured person
Uniformed Groups - Building an individual's resilience and leadership abilities with outdoor activities etc...
Sports - Trains the mind, body and soul; teamwork, determination etc...
Clubs & Societies - Allows one to pursue other interests in robotics etc

In fact, I believe information on CCAs will be available during the CCA Open House but outside the sphere of the event, I am sure information will be available on websites, blogs etc considering the proliferating nature of mass communications today.

Hence, I would advise parents to maybe do some research on the Internet should they require more information to help their child make an informed choice. You can start with the school's website for CCA information and if that's not enough, then just google \"the School + CCA\" and I am sure a whole range of websites will pop up.

For example, I tried the following search words:
      (i) \"Nan Hua High School CCAs\"
(ii) \"Nan Hua Clubs and Societies\"
(iii) \"Nan Hua Performing Arts Groups\"
and up pops a few websites such as follows:

Performing Arts - Symphonic Band (http://nhsb.blogspot.com/)
Uniformed Groups - National Police Cadet Corps (http://nhnp.blogspot.com/)
      Clubs & Societies - Innovation Club (http://nhinno.blogspot.com/)

Honestly, some of the websites/blogs are really informative and more amazingly, very well maintained by the students themselves.

All in all, I hope that parents here can provide sound advice to their children, bearing in mind the learning outcomes, when making their CCA choices. It is a choice that will impact them and follow them through for 4 years.

        Hey all,

Yea, I agree that skipping the O Levels may be good in the sense that exam stress can be avoided. However, maybe I am part of the old school system [O Level, A Level then University], I feel that O Levels at least gives one a platform to fall back onto with a Certificate at least. Moreover, it's a rather similar system that builds up to the A Levels, which is also conducted by the S'pore Cambridge Exams Syndicate. So it gives students more exposure probably to how Sg/Cambridge conduct their exams and who knows, that may be an advantage?

The Os to As systems is also trusted and proven over the years whereas the IP system is still a new kid on the block and it may still take years for it to really set in. Of course, IP students can't fare too badly and I don't think MOE will allow students in the IP to fare so badly, otherwise it will be a slap in their face that the IP system isn't working. Hmm...come to think of it, maybe that's why in recent years, more students have been getting straight As or maybe our kids have grown smarter? Haha, certainly food for thought.

Well, whichever the programme (Os or IP), I think each has its pros and cons. More importantly, it is best to quickly settle into the new sec sch environment and maximise the time there to get the best results in whichever programme. Sometimes in life, one does not have choices and just have to make full use of what's available to us..haha!

All the best to all parents' DDs to do well in their respective schools and yup, enjoy the CCA Extravaganza tomorrow!
THANKS calypso!! This is very encouraging and good thoughts abt the old exam system vs the thru train.

Hello to all the parents of NHHS. How are your children adapting in the sch so far?

Sch is conducting CCA audition, do yr children got the CCA they choose?

Most of the subject lessons have kick started, DD feels Math is easy thus far (probably is a familiar subject) and the other subjects have not much comments… Did your DD/DS comment anything?

They r camping in school today, hope all the kids there enjoy themeselves.

            Hi Julongmum,

My girl CCA is NCC which she does not like it. She put first choice Art and Design and second choice English Drama but she not even had chance for audition. 😒

May I know which class your DD in? Mine is 105.

So far she has no much comment on all subjects. She just told me that she has a lot of homework and I hope that she can manage it.

              hi fxchow,

My DD in 108. She was very happy with the class which she quoted 'the enthusiastic class'. She also felt that the Orientation Camp is 100 times more fun than the P5 camp.

She will take part in ball game as CCA that she has to attend training 3 times a week  sounds 'siong' I hope she can cope mentally and physically. How many days your DD has to stay back in sch for NCC?

Yes, she has many homework each day though some need not be completed by that day as need only to hand in the following week. But I always tell her to complete as much as possible so not to accumulate till those tasks become 'urgent and important'.

                Hi julongmum

Thank for yr advice. We actually thought of without going thru 'O' level exam will eliminate the unecessary exam stress, so we wanted to place dd in RV which is IP but seem like things are not going our way, perhaps nature has decided what is the best for her, anyway, dd is also happy with NH and already making new friends in her class.
                Hi Whitely,
is your dd in NH or manage into RV? I guess she is happy even if she stays put as the students whom I spoke to or appear to me that they like the school v much πŸ˜‰

That's great to hear that your DD enjoyed the Orientation Camp so much but my DD just said ok lor.

Wow, need to stay back 3 days for the CCA, really 'siong' lor. My girl only stay back 1 day for her CCA.

Yes, if can ask them to complete their homework ASAP although no need to submit on the next day.

The common test will be coming soon, hope they can pass with flying colour. πŸ˜„

You mean your daughter did not get any of her first 2 CCA choices? Was NCC one of her choices for CCA? If she does not like NCC, is there any chance to appeal against the CCA?

                      Hi Julongmum,

Wow, 3 days of training a week is indeed tough. Which sport is she in?

Well, she'll have to learn to manage her time properly between work and play. Yup, it's imperative to get as much homework done as early as possible before everything piles up...haha!

                        Hi Calypso,

Yes, she did not get any of her first 3 CCA choices. Instead, she got the 4th choice - NCC as everyone had to choose 1 uniform group.

After re-consideration, she decided to accept NCC as her CCA.
