Learning Chinese (Primary/Preschool)

Greetings Folks!


Hope someone can help.

We have a 7-yr-old child who's now attending P1.
We would like to her to continue her Chinese enrichment classes [from Tien Hsia] since we don't speak Chinese at home (we are Malay).

Our child started her weekly class in Tien Hsia when she is in K1
Unfortunately Tien Hsia, Han Language School and a few others are now catering to P1 syllabus.

Is there any parents with same situation and have successfully done something that's effective for his/her child?
Please share what you did, we want to learn how.

Expose them to more mandarin tv programmes, and mandarin books! TV programmes are great, though, and kids seem to enjoy them.

To those pm me recently: the teacher I mentioned in the forum told me, all her slots had been taken. For those interested, you will have a chance in June. As her O level students will stop the tuition after the exam in early June. Then, she will take a short break around 2 weeks before back to work later in June.

You could give them customized chinese exercises or get them to a good chinese tuition centre where the teacher to student ratio is small so they can get the most from the class.


My son was weak once but now he has improved quite a lot. If you are interested to know which tuition centre he went to, PM me.

I am new here. I would like to get some advice for my son. He is currently taking Mandarin as his 2nd language in school. He is in P1. We are a local Singaporean North Indian family. No one speaks Chinese at home except for some basic conversational words that I carry out with my son sometimes.

He has been taking Mandarin as his 2nd language since K1 in his CC. He is able to recognise words and read out what he knows but doesn't speak at all. I would like to enrol him in some speech classes.

I would appreciate any advice from the mummies here.

you may enrol your son into :-

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan classes (SHHK, at Toa Payoh Lorong 2) for P1 Chinese Show & Tell (1.5 hrs)

this course involve -

• Listening to sentences and choose the correct picture.

• Listening to sentences and fill in the Hanyu Pinyin.

• Learn through Look-Say Method: Describe a scene using the picture and the word list.

• Cloze Passage.

• Picture and Passage Reading.

• Listening Comprehension.

besides training him to speak out / articulate in Mandarin, you may consider how about let him learn more Chinese grammar & vocabulary ?

for this, you may consider :-
b) Chinese Kumon

may try Kumon (Novena) branch

they'll train him to read aloud Chinese passages daily (Monday to Friday), initially using a CD, to help him.
besides reading aloud, Kumon will also train him on recognizing Chinese vocabulary, grammar.

the Principal will assess your son : see which level of Kumon Chinese he can take off from.

you can see a lot of Indian boys and girls go there, to learn Chinese.

c) consider Tien Hsia or Han Chinese.

but this is only once a week enrichment (1.5 hrs), follow Sg MOE syllabus closely.
Kumon is daily dosage.

Tien Hsia class is often big : > 10 kids per class
