      FantasyLandDreams:
Just sharing a friend’s story who tried to transfer to Rosyth and Tao Nan using P4 end of year results. The child is third in standard in a neighbourhood school. He has numerous MO certs, is a prefect and in school Basketball team who has won a zonal prize as well. The child was given the second best class in p5 due to random S-formation during class allocation of students to the top 2 classes, hence the mum thought of doing a transfer.

Both Rosyth and Tao Nan told his mum they might not be able to give him the top mainstream class. I guess there is no lack of ‘talents’ at the Gep centres. Hence in the end decided not to transfer.
Your two friends' children had transferred in only at end of P4, as such had already missed the P4 year-end streaming exercise in Rosyth, thus given only P5 Mixed-ability or Average class, not Top class.

It is a different case, from tonald.

Tonald's child still have one whole year of P4 to prove herself (himself), prepare for end-of-P4 streaming, still got chance to enter one of 2020 P5 Top classes.

The timing of when they transfer in are different, in 2 different sets of scenario.

        Hi

I applied Rosyth transfer waiting list. next year will be p4. recent received school call got vaccancy can join.
may i know some information about Rosyth coming year classes information for example whuch class is Best class and 2nd Best class then rest?
so far kid current school also good but not as top as rosyth. now in Best class with high chinese. academic result is also good. just worry if been assigned to bad class then affect kidperformance. Then may have to give up this chance as \" in good school best class is better that top school bad class\".

can any parent kid in 2019 P4 can share information or private chat also welcome.

        :thankyou: (

Actually is up to u, whether want to accept Rosyth Transfer (since the ball already landed in your court yard), or turn it down.

Ask yourself honestly, what are the pros and con ?

        Disadvantage ?
Rosyth doesn't have affliation to any Secondary school, whatsoever. As such, come P5, P6, will be stressful for both parents & students here.

        Advantage ?
If accept the Transfer, in future, your grandchildren can enrol into Rosyth primary, provided (on condition that) Phase 2A2 still continue to exist, by the time your grand-children register for Primary 1 in Year xx.

What can u possibly look forward to, if accept the Transfer ?

For \"Transfer-in\" students into Rosyth primary at end of P3, they will get assigned to only the \"Mixed-ability\" or Average classes, but not to any of the Top (Mainstream) classes.

However, at end of P4, there is streaming, into new P5 classes.

This means that you have one entire, whole year (2019) to work hard, to prove yourself, target to enter one of the Top few Mainstream classes, come 2020 P5.

As u are also a new pupil (student) joining Rosyth, u won't become prefect so fast, because Teachers and classmates do not know u yet, must be patient, be humble at all times.

However, u have one full year (2019), to prove your capability, your stewardship, your leadership. You need to re-prove yourself, come to another new school environment / culture. At the end of P4, if your Form Teacher or subject Tr find u responsible, helpful to your fellow peer classmates whenever they encounter issue, Form Tr and Co-Form Tr can recommend u to be a prefect.

When u Transfer in from another school, both Form Tr as well as Co-Form Tr will read your ex Report card, read what your ex (former) school Tr had said about you, in the past 3 years (2016 P1 to 2018 P3).

Although u may not be a prefect immediately in 2019 P4 since u are a new student, however sometimes Form Tr may assign u certain classroom responsibilities or school compound (premises) responsibilities, and observe your behavior quietly (discreetly), from here (starting point).
So, take up these small-step, tasks well, do your best.

As Rosyth is a GEP school, a number of parents & students here are very competitive, particularly (especially) in those Top few classes, per level. Because come each year-end at end of Term 4 after SA2 is over, there is this prize award ceremony whereby different types (category) of award are given out to Top x number of pupils per class, and also given out, at per cohort level basis.

Now, it is up to u, view whether a glass is half filled with water, or is the glass empty content ?

Thanks a lot for your reply. It's really very helpful information.
I am interesting with the term in your words - \"\"Mixed-ability\" or Average classes\"
Average classes I could understand, what does it mean of \"Mixed-ability\"?
And any difference with high Chinese lesson and normal Chinese lesson (mother tongue language) in P4?

I also heard that now Rosyth will not put any transferred student into top classes, will them put all the transfer student into same class or different average classes?

I got almost same concerns as those were mentioned by all the replies. It seems kid is very optimism, only complain hate to take bus everyday (if transferred, have to take bus back to home everyday if no school bus). So I have to try to get school bus seat.
I worry about his adaptation in new environment. He is very confident that no problem to make new friend and stay in new class.
Then I said teacher will not pay much attention to him, his answer is now teachers are also don't pay much attention to him and no attention means no complain to parent then he would be very happy.
Well, either he is brave or totally without any thinking. I am more hesitation than kid.
It's not decision time yet, now is just try to get more information before the decision time.

Back to question, do you mind spend a bit more time to explain \"Mixed-ability\" class?

Top-class means at end of P4, entering into new P5 classes, students get streamed into Top x number of classes, based on results.

"Mixed-ability" class, is the same terminology as "Average" class. The word "Mixed", already indicate (imply) that inside such class, there are pupils who learn at faster pace, while there are also pupils who learn at moderate normal (average) pace.

          Now, your child only P3.
After he / she had Transferred successfully into Rosyth, can approach your Form Tr, ask Tr what’s the new streaming criteria going to be like, in case there are new changes, starting from 2019 onwards.

          Eg

U may ask Form Tr : is streaming at end of P4, done at a Total score of (3 or 4 ) subjects, combined together ?

3 subjects means Total of P4 English, Maths, Science, upon 300, exclude Mother Tongue.

4 subjects means Total upon 400, include Mother Tongue as well.

Since Rosyth is a Non-SAP school, Mother Tongue can be (Tamil, Malay, Chinese )

You can ask your class Chinese Tr -
At end of 2019 P4 streaming, if want to continue with 2020 P5 Higher Chinese in Rosyth, what criteria is required, in your end-of-P4 streaming Normal Chinese results ?

When your child Transfer into Rosyth, fastest period need at least minimum 4 to 6 months, to adapt to a new school environment, new school Teachers, new classmates. Longer, can take up to 1 year, to adapt. Let him take his time.

Thanks a lot, you are very kind. Those questions are great helpful.
I will talk to teacher and ask those questions, and please let me know if you got other questions like what you have mentions.

To adapt new environment, we will try to help him.
He is confident on this part but I am wondering why he is so sure. We will watch how he will do it.

Well .....let’s put it this way that in general, irregardless which year you transfer in, usually you will not get the best 2 classes in the new school. Just trying to highlight a prospective ‘con’ side to him, not saying that his child won’t make it to the best 2 classes in p5 lah, don’t get me wrong. :siam:

The advantages of getting into top classes allow the child to study at a faster pace and possibly stretch one’s potential when you study with the higher ability group and in a so call more competitive environment.

However, it is not a guarantee that one will score above 250 in PSLE. For some unknown reasons, there are students in top classes who did not do well and scored 21x - 23x. An extreme case I heard of was below 200 and the need to choose between express and normal.

If I am seeking a transfer for my younger one, I will look for 1 that has an affiliation to secondary (for security reason), otherwise, I do not see much advantage.

For Rosyth, whatever class you are being allocated to in P5 will be the same for P6.
