      Hi all,

I'm a newbie to this platform but am glad to find my way to this forum! I was trying to research about SCGS as my daughter has just received her PSLE results yest, she got 252+2HMT, and I think the closest fit for her will be SCSG or RVHS, if I'm considering IP for her.

As she is my eldest child, I'm totally inexperienced in choosing schools. I briefly read thru' the threads, and find it really insightful! Thanks for all the kind sharing here...

I've some questions and hope to seek some advice:-

      1) SCGS is an independent school while RVHS is a govt school. One of the key differences i can see would be the school fees, independent is more than 10 folds. Many had shared that there is difference in independent vs govt school (the extra $$$ paid is justified). Any thots to this...

      2) If my daughter gets into SCGS IP, does it mean she is confine to go only EJC? Can she request for transfer to another JC at a later stage?

      3) What is the general start/end school time? What is the average commitment to CCA (i.e. how many times/hours per week)? Any supplementary classes where girls are expected to stay back? etc

Other than cheaper school fees for RV.

      1) It has no affiliation primary school
      2) It has no O level track
      3) It is a SAP school. Minimum B4 in Eng and HCL plus GPA 2 to promote yearly.
      4) For first 3 years, back to back graded weekly test, assignments and projects. Plus mid year and eoy exams.
      5) Presence of strong student bonding to cope with demanding load.
      6) At 4th year, no more weekly tests but still have standard term tests including mid year and eoy. Plus O levels higher Chinese.

      Thank you!

      Anyone any insights on SCGS?

1). For Independent schools like SCGS, the school can exercise discretion on hiring the (very best) teachers they deem fit to teach particular subjects. There is definitely more freedom. And there are also many enrichment programmes organized by the school. For non-Independent schools like RVHS, teachers are assigned/rostered by MOE.

2). SCGS IP is tied to EJC. I am not very sure if a student can appeal to other JCs at a later stage though.

As we know, SCGS all along is very strong in English (Language Arts). But as the IP girls need to merge with St Nic (SAP) and Cath High (SAP) at Yr5/Yr6, the school has now injected more Chinese-related programmes such as Bi-Cultural Studies Program (BSP) in Yr3, for which I am very glad, not just English is very strong, the school also managed to kindle DD’s interest in Chinese stuff.

3). School starts at 7.40am, usually ends between 2pm-3pm. No, my girl does not stay back for supplementary class. Her CCA is twice a week till around 6.30pm.

Hi all, I am staying in Woodlands and I am trying to figure out public transport options for my gal to travel to SCGS on her own. So far, I only managed to find 2: (1) take train from Woodlands station to Newton station and then change to downtown line and alight at Stevens station or (2) take bus 960e from woodlands bus interchange. If anyone would be able to comment if it’s advisable to take bus to school in the morning? How Long is the travelling time for (1) and (2)? I have heard that the traffic jam can be really bad. If there is another route which saves travelling time, please do share with me.

Lastly, do girls usually have lunch in school before making their way back home on days they aren’t required to stay back? Weird question but my gal is concerned that it’s weird that she is the only one sitting in the canteen, though I think it’s unlikely since there should be CCA going on Everyday…

          Thanks and appreciate any input.

Thanks, Lee_ly! Very helpful sharing! Much appreciated 🙂 I make a trip to the school Open House this morning, it’s really a nice school and my girl loves the school at her first sight! 🙂

My DD completed Sec 1 at SCGS (not from SCGPS). I guess it's only been a year so I do not know the full range of SCGS programmes yet. But my reflections are:

                  1) SCGS has many many outstanding girls who are able to present themselves, and articulate well. I think my DD has benefited from learning from them.
                  2) I like the peer influence. School rules are strict. Peer influence is very positive to me. I was so worried about girls schools being 'toxic' or 'petty' or 'drama', but so far I feel the peers are supportive. There are cliques for sure, but nothing vicious or what.
                  3) School hours are to me, long. Hence, all girls have lunch in school. Not possible to lunch at home as school days end earliest, 2 pm.
                  4) Exposure opportunities are available for everyone! 🙂 Even for my daughter, who isn't outstanding in anything, I feel she's got some opportunities in Sec 1.
                  5) The Malacca trip is great fun, it's great bonding and builds memories forever.
                  6) The alumni network is amazing - they return to give career talks and all.
                  7) Facilities the past year are bleah - it was like a construction site. Should be better from next year onwards.
It is Singapore's first girls school to be founded by locals 🙂 I think the school pride is great.

Even though SCGS is further from my place compared to other options, we have no regrets.

Ha point 2 & 4 are my concerns too! While it's unlikely i've to worry about BGR but the thots of GGR makes me shiver!!! Pray hard, this will never happen anyone of us!

Hi, i have a few questions and I hope to seek some advise from this SCGS forum.

                      1) Is the CCA schedule for secondary division subject to changes every year?

                      2) in order to take higher Chinese at O level, does it means the child has to take higher Chinese starting from Sec 1?

                      3) for those students taking higher Chinese in Sec 1, do they have to stay back after official school hours to have lessons?

                      4) is the Stevens train station very far away from SCGS? Is it within 5mins walk?

                      Thank you.

1). Guess it depends on who’s the teacher-in-charge of the CCA next year? Last year, DD1’s CCA was on Tue and Thurs, this year also. During school holidays, students may also be required to go back for CCA practices.

                        2). Yes.

3). No. HCL lessons are conducted during school hours.

4). Nope. Steven stations is quite near actually. The airconditined underpass is only 65m long and the exit is built right next to SCGS (see pic below). My girl estimated 5 mins walk
