Singapore Chinese Girls School (Secondary)
-
Hi, i have a few questions and I hope to seek some advise from this SCGS forum.
1) Is the CCA schedule for secondary division subject to changes every year?
2) in order to take higher Chinese at O level, does it means the child has to take higher Chinese starting from Sec 1?
3) for those students taking higher Chinese in Sec 1, do they have to stay back after official school hours to have lessons?
4) is the Stevens train station very far away from SCGS? Is it within 5mins walk?
Thank you. -

1). Guess it depends on who’s the teacher-in-charge of the CCA next year? Last year, DD1’s CCA was on Tue and Thurs, this year also. During school holidays, students may also be required to go back for CCA practices.

2). Yes.
3). No. HCL lessons are conducted during school hours.
4). Nope. Steven stations is quite near actually. The airconditined underpass is only 65m long and the exit is built right next to SCGS (see pic below). My girl estimated 5 mins walk

1. It's CCA dependent, and also subject to coaches (if any) schedules.

2. I think so - do check with the school. Do note that there are a fair number of students who drop HCL after Sec 1. Not everyone is keen on HCL.
3. HCL is conducted during school hours. For this year's batch of Sec 1s, two classes have MT lessons at the same time. During MT period, the HCL students from both classes will attend HCL together; similarly the CL students from both classes will attend CL together. I would say SCGS school hours are already pretty long so I'm certainly glad HCL is during school hours.
4. Very near. I would consider it practically, door-step. Plus the station is not large - short walk to the train platform. The irony is everyone thinks MRT is doorstep for my HCI son - it's actually far more tedious for HCI High School kids to walk to the MRT station as it is at the JC end. I really appreciate how SCGS is so close to the MRT station. -
My DD is so excited to be on duty on Reporting Day (23 Dec) to welcome the new batch of Sec 1s!
There is something lovely about the SCGS school environment, though I can’t put my finger to it. (I’m saying this even though my DD is not exactly faring well academically at SCGS or what, haha) -
Thanks doodbug and lee_yl. Much appreciated!
Being a first time mum having a child in Sec school next year, I am feeling nervous and excited and of course, not knowing what to expect.
I saw on SCGS website that CCA usually falls on tues and thurs and sometimes Fri. So i am trying to get a sense on which are the days my girl need to stay back late. May I ask how are the school hours like for SCGS?
On HCL, does it means those taking HCL need not take the CL? I was informed by my friends that students need to take HCL either at O level or at A level. Have I been misled? Their kids aren’t in SGGS but they mentioned it’s a standard...? of course, my girl would raise both hands not to take HCL at all if given a choice.
I just read on the school rules as well. Looks strict but what caught my attention was the registration of finger prints.... I can’t help but to visualise a line forming. Is it a Long process and do the girls have to arrive school much earlier to start queuing to have their finger prints registered by 7.40am, rain or shine?
Thanks for assurance on the walking distance to SCGS. Its should be much safer with the underpass.
Doodbug, hopefully my girl get to see your girl on 23rd. She is the only one from her primary school going to SCGS and is starting to get the jitters if she might be able to adapt...doodbug\" post_id=\"1950049\" time=\"1574840163\" user_id=\"13281:

My DD was the only one from her Pri Sch who went to SCGS IP (Another girl went to SCGS O level Programme). Actually, my daughter's DSA application to SCGS was unsuccessful - she tried under two domains - Leadership and Sports. I expected her to be so discouraged/demoralized. After PSLE, she STILL opted for SCGS.
I expected her to try for NYGH as her elder bro is in HCI, but I guess every child has his/her own mind and preference.
Sec 1 School Hours: 2.50 pm on Mondays and all other days, 2 or 2.10 pm. It's considered long to me. (My other child ended at 1.30 pm every weekday in lower Sec.)
Sorry I am not a HCL/CL expert. But I would say just give HCL a try. Can always drop to CL after Sec 1 if cannot manage or don't like HCL. The beauty of SCGS is that it is a diverse group of girls with different strengths and interests - it DOES NOT matter whether you opt for HCL or CL, you won't feel out of place either route; neither will you feel advantaged or disadvantaged in either route. It is not a cut throat competitive type of environment. Don't get me wrong - the girls are brilliant (and many are beautiful!) but they are not selfish or competing against each other.
Fingerprints and attendance taking - no issue with long queues or what. DD never ever mentioned it was any trouble. But do remember to clock attendance otherwise it's considered \"absent\". -

Cannot remember when but anyone who meets MOE’s Higher MTL criteria (extracted from MOE website below), will read HMTL in Sec 1.
The formal eligibility criteria for HMTL have been eased to the following:
Top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or
Top 11-30% of the PSLE cohort with A* in MTL at PSLE or at least a Merit in HMTL. -
:thankyou:
