Yes, it's challenging! To complete a good compo within 50mins, writing specific to pics given with power phrases is not easy! Btw, what is a reasonable volume or rather how many pages (400 words per page) does ur dd write? Mine usually writes 3 full pages, so I told her that she needs to do one page every 15mins and keep last 5mins to run through what she had written. Not sure how it went for her today...
I told my DD not to write so much too else compromise quality. Writing too much runs a risk of exposure, writing too little lacks content no meat, so it's really about balancing.[/quote]OMG! My girl wrote 5.5 pages!!! Her school prelim compo paper is 400 per page but she told me the psle is 300 per page. I scolded her for writing so much but she say can't help as the story got lotsa details, if not she cannot cover all description. She finish just a minute or so before time. -

All the best to her Science paper tmr !

For Psle Standard Chinese (paper 1) " kan tu " zuowen ,
minimum 3.5 pages expected.
(2.5 to 3 ) pages is considered short -
This year's 看图作文 has quite a lot of content to cover and just like the past couple of years, has a main theme (路不拾遗/诚实) and a sub theme (乐于助人/关怀他人). 50 mins is indeed challenging for completing a top grade compo. Well, at least the CL papers and done and over with. All the best for the remaining paper(s)! :rahrah:

I find that the explanation or method given is too long and a little complicated in the videos.
one of the tuition agency posted the qns and answer to psle 2020.

For the triangle question. For example, though my method to solve is the same, my explanation will be:
add the extra 54 cm to the width of the rectangle which is 2 X 15 = 30cm. Therefore, total length of all the sides will be 54 + 30 = 84 cm (which will be the length of the 12 sides of the cut paper). I ignore the length of the rectangle as the perimeter of the cut paper includes the 2 original lengths. As there are 12 sides of the triangles, take 84 divide by 12 = 7 which is the length of 1 side of the triangle. As there are 2 sides of the triangle, total is 2 x 7 = 14 plus the 5 cm at the base = 19 cm.
I find that sometimes it's better to use the simplest explanation to teach students instead of making it too technical which may hinder their understanding especially for weaker students. That's why I emphasize process thinking skills and how to apply information given to solve them.
BTW, there is a flaw with this question. If we use Pythagoras' theorem, the side of the triangle is 6.87cm based on the area of a triangle is 16cm2. For any question set, regardless of whichever methods used, the answer must be the same. Hopefully MOE will realize this and not penalize students using PT to solve.
For high ability students, they are allowed to use topics taught in sec school to solve such as simultaneous equations instead of models. For PSLE, as long as the students have the ability, they are allowed to apply them. Of course, if I deem my students wouldn't be able to master any higher order methods, I won't teach them. Having said that, I do have pri 4 students who are very good in factorization when I teach them Factors.
