HCL is compulsory for All IP students in Catholic High (SAP school)
At end of Sec 4,
All IP students sit for O-level (HCL) exam.
All IP students,
no need to sit for O-level (bu-hua) in Sec 3, because they are destination bound for Eunoia Junior College, hence don't need to be bothered by this L1R5 thing.

for O-level track CHS students, HCL is Not compulsory.
O-level students do have a choice.
a)
If Moe has already given your son the HCL eligibility letter, then he (in O-level track) can study HCL from Sec 1.
Three years later, in Sec 3,
he will take O-level (bu-hua) National exam first.
In Sec 4, the following year, then he take O-level (gao-hua) exam next, in the month of November, together with rest of all the other IP students inside the exam hall.
b)
But,
if your son didn't receive any MOE HCL letter, then he will proceed to study CL (bu-hua) in Sec 1, not gao-hua.
However,
when reach the end of his Sec 1 journey -
if O-level track students are keen & interested to study Sec 2 gao-hua, they can appeal to CHS Chinese HOD,
using their Sec 1 Report card (showing bu-hua CL results + overall results in other subjects as well including English, Maths, Science & best performance in Humanities subject). Out of 3 Humanities subjects, choose the best one

Apart from this HCL thing, two years later, for O-level track CHS students,
at the end of Sec 2 streaming year,
If they are keen to Transfer across to IP starting Sec 3, can approach Principal directly.
P will interview short-listed candidates for suitability, to join Sec 3 IP curriculum.
Once vacancies are released, because successful O-level students have Transferred across into IP, then
the other way round now,
end-of-Y2 students from the IP track who wish to Transfer back to OP quickly to prepare for O-level exam just in time for Upper (Sec 3 and 4) , because after attempted IP for two years, they find that IP doesn't quite suit them after all, they will grab these vacancies eagerly, after seats released by the O-level students who have transferred across successfully into IP (Sec 3).
As you know,
the O-level seats in CHS, are very precious.
Why precious ?
because
every year, at end of Sec 2 streaming, there is a lot of movement
- not just internally within CHS from different OP and IP track only,
- but also from external students studying in other schools locally also seeking transfer into CHS. These pupils can be from any local Sec school.
- as well as students from Asean countries also seeking Transfer in, concurrently.

Most IP students who take HCL do not need to take O level Express chinese at Sec 3 as long as you pass HCL in school exams. But this pass criteria may differ from school to school. Most schools will indicate it as C6 (50%), but in certain schools such as NYGH you need a min of B4 (60%) for HCL at the end of Sec 2. My friend’s Sec 3 dd from NYGH had to sit for O level express chinese exam this year because she only got 50+% for her HCL in Sec 2. I think for SCGS, the pass criteria is 50%.

My son is feeling restless at home. May I know what did you all do to occupy your son’s time now… ? Please give me suggestion, I don want to see him playing handphone games all the time

Get him
1) to learn typing skill \"asdf ;lk ...\"
This will enable him to type faster when he submit individial / group project presentation in IP / O-level, from Sec 1 onwards
Practise typing until without looking at the keyboard, using His fingers position, he know how to type
2) to learn basic cooking survival skill like how to fry an omelette, cook fried rice, cook spagetti at home, marinate chicken chop. When boys grow up, get married, have family, can't always depend on wife to cook for them at home all the time.
If not sure how up cook, have to start from somewhere,
can start off with simple menu inside your Sec 1 textbook
\"Food & Consumer\" Education.
Inside contain some simple basic cookery recipe. Just follow instructions there
3) read up simple Chinese zuowen article from zao bao magazine. Alternately, go to the Secondary Chinese thread, because Chen laoshi recommended some good reading basic simple Zuo wen books, which u can buy from Popular.
This is a good series \"ai San du bao\", to kick start reading up, will help your child in Secondary Zuo wen. Inside contain many colourful pictures, hence wont be dull reading them, because the colourful pictures attract the reader

4) go swimming or cycling, exercise in the evening to keep fit & healthy

do some volunteering work at SPCA if you are a dog lover etc -

I just asked my DD's teacher - SCGS IP students reading HMT do not take O level MT in Sec 3.
However, not all SCGS girls who start with HMT, continue with HMT for four years - some of the girls who fail HMT in Sec 1/2/3, do drop HMT. -

For OP students:-
1) In S3, they will take 普华 national exam, and the score can be used for L1R5?
2) In S4, they will take 高华 national exam, and this score can be used for L1R5 and bonus 2pts deduction?
3) If the result for 高华 is borderline kind but still pass (btw what grade is pass?), then the student use it to earn bonus 2pts but not consider it in L1R5 aggregate?
For IP students,
1) Only required to take 高华 national exam at S4, and if the pass then JC1 & 2 can throw away all CL books liao?
