OK, I see. Is it fair to say that the Sec 1s have 6 examinable subjects?

      English (includes Lit)
      HCL
      Math
      Science
Geo or History (believe you get a different grade for each of these but only one is going on at a time)
      Info Comm

Third Language or AEP would add a 7th.

Is this structure the same in Sec 2? And then Sec 3 will be minimum of 8 examinable subjects with 9-10 possible depending on specific programmes or electives like Bio, Computing, 3rd Language, AEP, etc (10th subject requiring approval)?

Depending on what you mean by examinable. In terms of what is counted into MSG,, yess what you wrote is correct, except that it is missing Project Work, which may or may not be included (depending on the policy that year). All the info will be made known during the MTP session.

The boys will learn to manage on their own.

If my no-A* boy managed to survive Sec 1 to 3 without any interference or monitoring on my part, all your sons are in a much stronger position and will thrive and fully reap the benefits of a HCI education. Don't worry too much πŸ™‚ There is a lot to learn and enjoy at HCI.

Project Work @ Lower Secondary, in Hwa Chong

Are there any subject(s) that doesn't involve any project work at all ?

              1)

Sec 2 (Maths & Science), any project work involved ?

can name one example of Maths and another example of

(Physics / Chem / Bio) project work ?

              For Physics,
did you build a mini dam in small group of 3 to 4 pupils ?

              2)

Sec 2 Humanities (History / Geography), any project work assignment ?

              can give one example for
History / Geog project work ?

              3)

Sec 2 English and gao-hua (Higher Chinese) languages, any project work ?

can give an example of English language or Eng Literature project work ?

                #1. For Lower Secondary Science,

                a) In Sec 1, are they taking \"one Science\" class and the topics are either Chem or Physics related depending on the week/term? Or, is it more like taking two different science classes?

                b) In Sec 2, is Bio added? Earlier posts (quite a while ago) indicated it was, but I saw the Sec 2 booklist is still just Chem and Physics. I.e. if Bio is not added in Sec 2 and students do not opt for Bio in Sec 3-4, they will not take Bio at all (seems OK as most university requirements can be met with Physics or Chem).

                Thanks
Hey there! Just wanted to add some stuff altho it's not that related to ur qn:

Regarding the Chem and physics textbooks in the booklist, HCI actually produces its own science notes, so the textbooks are really just for extra reference. tbh I rarely touched the books (if at all)

Also, as a side note, JC students can opt to take H2 Biology even without taking Bio in High School should they wish to πŸ™‚

                  Hey phtthp,

Project Work is actually a separate thing from the other subjects; you can find more about PW on this website: https://sites.google.com/hci.edu.sg/hs-pw/home?authuser=0

As for group work during the other subjects:

                  1. I don't recall doing any large-scale projects for Math or Science

                  2. I believe in the current syllabus they are required to do a History Investigative Task and a Geography Investigative Task in either Sec 1 and Sec 2 but I'm not sure of the exact details or what it entails. I have seen some students do up some models or something like that before though.

                  3. There's usually some small group work which doesn't carry weightage (I rmb doing some skits for ELL to recreate the scenes in the Lit book we were studying) or some small presentations on various stuff.

                  Hope this helps!

Project Work is one full dedicated \"subject\" at HCI. It has a grade (A1, A2 etc), and initially, there were plans for it to count as one full subject in the MSG. However, this year, due to Covid-19 measures, a lot of projects encoutered quite some difficulty/hindrance. Hence I believe there was some tweak to the policy to include it in the MSG computation only if it is a distinction grade (I can't recall the specifics - my son scored B3 for PW so his case, PW was excluded from the MSG). I am not sure what the policy will be from next year.

In 2019 and before, Project Work was not counted in the Academic MSG.

As for projects within the other academic subjects, frankly I am quite hands off so I am not sure how much project work there is within each subject. There are Historical and Geographical investigations, but I can't recall whether they are on a group or individual basis, and what the weightage is.

Hi there! Sorry to intrude... just wanna say that's Really nice of the college! I then searched http://www.hci.edu.sg/admissions/college/academic-programmes-college & read about the prerequisites plus assumed knowledge. So, may I assume that there's No bridging course for these students then? Thanks in advance!!

There are pre-requisites for reading H2 A level Bio if one did not read it in High School - I believe you need to achieve a certain minimum grade for Chemistry in Sec 4.

I personally attempted Bio at HCJC over 20 years ago, without doing O levels Bio. I did Music as the 10th O level subject and hence could not opt for Bio at O levels.
About 7 or 8 of my HCJC classmates had no O level Bio. Most of them continued with it. I personally found the content catch up onerous, and hence, after the 1st three months, I switched out to Economics. There were no bridging classes then. There is no longer the concept of "first three months" in today’s system. I’m not sure whether there are bridging classes now.
