Understand your kid is great at her 3rd lang Jap. What is her subject combination in Sec 3? Puzzled how to fit Malay in. Is 9 or 10 subject too heavy? She should be able to meet the requirements.
My girls took 9 inclusive of jap. Quite manageable not busy even at sec 4....I think my girls are the chill kind. 10th subject needs special approval by school cos the online subject selection portal only has 9 subjects at the max. If the msg is above 2 then only 8 subject choices are available via the portal.

At end of Year 2 streaming exercise,
how are the Year 3 classes organized? Is it

1a) all those taking Total 8 subjects form one class (X),

1b) all those taking Total 9 subjects form another class (Y),

1c) all those taking Total 10 subjects form another class (Z) ?

        OR

1d) all those taking Total (9 or 10) subjects, are placed together into the same Year 3 class,

        because

not so many Year 3 students are found taking Total 10 subjects, hence unable to form one class by itself ?

Not too sure but I think sorted by triple science then double science double humans etc…HP is a separate class on its own.

The girls are allowed to take different combinations of subjects.

Except for one HP class & one SIP class, the other classes are mixed with students taking 8 subjects/ 9 subjects (with different subjects)/ advance subjects/ 3rd language, etc. There is no clear differentiation like 8 subject class/ 9 subject class etc. For eg. 1 class can be made up of students doing triple science, or 2 sciences & geo/& history/& literature, advance sci.

Hi parents. Any of your DDs are taking this combi in Sec 3: triple science, geography, IH, double math, LA and HCL? Is the workload very heavy? Especially those with other commitments (advanced subjects, special programs, leadership position…), how are your DDs coping?

The school seems to discourage 9 subjects but I’m worried about giving up one science at this early age. And DD is keen to try for the other commitments.

Any experience sharing or advice will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Sorry to ride on this qn. How easy is it to drop the 9th subject in NYGH, for eg. In middle of or end of Sec 3?

Entry into special programmes is not guaranteed?
taking 9 subjects is def not easy. lessons will end about 5pm on days.
you can only drop the 9th subject end of sec 3.

Thanks, v happy got experienced parents here to give advice.

My kid wants to do triple science (interested in comp engineering), but dont know which 2nd humanities to take. IH compulsory, so pair w pure History, Geog or Malay? She loves Geog, but don't want to do fieldwork. She doesnt like HI too much, but still gets decent score, is it v heavy to do HI with triple science? She likes Malay.
taking 9 subjects is tough, regardless which combination/ which 2nd humanities she's taking.
but if your daughter is interested & capable, why don't you trust her & let her try?

Doing 9 subjects plus advanced subjects or special programs like HSRRP or BSP or AEP or HMP would be challenging as I have heard these special programs require full fieldwork research project submission at end of the program (HSRRP and BSP) And if your daughter is in council or gunning for cca top position, I think that could take up a lot of time too.....having said that, take your daughter msg as a guide. If she's consistently around 1.2 or lower or near perfect 1.0, I don't see why the kid can't handle...

                      Hi there!

I was concerned hearing from one of the seasoned parents here that triple sci + hi + lack of interest in hi = burden.

She does not want to do fieldwork in geog, on other hand. Is there a lot of fieldwork at upper sec / JC?

She may not get into special programmes and all that jazz.
For upper sec geog, yes there is a group GI project for both sec 3 and 4. I do not know at JC level, I don't think so but geog is quite content heavy for A levels.
9 subjects with triple science and malay sounds manageable to me.....my girls are doing double science, geog and jap, looking manageable......

                        Parents,

whether your child is studying in an (IP school or in an O-level school) -

                        be sensitive, stay alert.

Even when want to consider drop subject(s) at end of Sec 3, one need to consider the sensitive, emotional aspect(s) of the pupil, not just always keep thinking one track mind - academically only.

                        Example

At end of Sec 3 (IP),
after promotional year-end results are released to go Sec 4,
have a good discussion with your (Form Teacher + the subject Teacher whose subject the pupil intend to drop), during \"Parents-Meet-Teacher\" session.

                        Why ?

                        Because

some end-of-Sec 3 students emotionally may feel \"paiseh\" or \"malu\", feel inadequate or overwhelmed, stubbornly refused to drop any subject(s), still cling on tightly to their 9 or 10 subjects, although deep inside them, they know that they ought to drop (because can't cope),

                        because

they don't want to be identified as the odd one out inside their own class, whereby everybody never dropped any subject inside the class except they themselves only. They may not want to become the target of gossip by fellow classmates during recess time, concerning \"hey, heard that so and so in our class, have dropped subject(s), you know ... \".

                        Well,
How do pupils inside the Sec 4 class, know that got students inside their class, drop subject(s) ?

Students themselves will automatically know after sometime, when a certain pupil keep going to the library to do her own self-study, each time school bell ring for the next lesson to start -

                        Unless

the pupil who have dropped out of the subject(s) continue to remain seated inside her classroom at her own desk, do her own homework quietly, instead of go to the library.

                        Sometimes,
even the school Counsellor need to be roped in emotionally & psychologically, to help a child (pupil) deal with
                        \" how to cope, when drop subject(s) ? \".

                        Why ?

                        Because

                        Self-esteem, self-worth is involved,
especially being Teenagers now at end of Sec 3, they are struggling to establish their own identity, in life: \"Who am I ? \" They are no longer a P6 Psle kid, anymore.

So, is Not just a simple issue of \" drop, means drop lah !\" so easy. Be careful (warning). There may be psychological effects behind, having the wrong thinking (mindset) that \"if I were to drop, can't cope, means I am lousy ... \"

Have you heard of this phrase before,
\"To reach the Top, is already difficult, challenging. However, to stay & remain at the Top, is even far more difficult ... \"
