Can anyone share more info about Raffles Academy program?

      - Is this an additional subject or it supercede a H2 subject?
      - Is this very tough to handle?

Another question, is student required to bring a laptop to school everyday?

Was using ipad in secondary school, so not sure if required to buy a new one.

My kid did RA Math last year. Lessons were conducted during curriculum time. What he told me was that the H2 syllabus was covered very quickly so that the rest of the time can be dedicated to RA content. Since students typically will only opt for RA if they possess strong interest, I don't think it's very tough to handle. Iirc, most of his class scored an A in the Y5 promo exam.

On the qn on laptop, my kid didn't have to bring it to sch. For project work which will be covered in Y5, just need one person in the group to bring the laptop will do.

My daughter took a RA subject about 5 yrs ago, but I expect the general idea is still the same. It's for students who are interested in the subject, and are reasonably confident of managing their H2s well. RA in itself doesn't have much obvious value as it's not recognised for university entry. It will add to the student's profile for general purposes like interviews etc, I suppose. RA students will be placed in classes with other students taking the same RA, and will have classes separate from those taking only the H2 subject.

If the student is not confident of H2s and might need to devote more time to preparing for them, then RA would probably not be a good idea. Taking an H3 in Y6 (which appears on the A level cert) might be better if you just want some additional boost to the profile? I think a lot of RA students do take an H3, not always in the same subject as the RA, as well.

As to how tough it is - that really depends on the student. Generally, those who take RA are strong students and don't find it exceptionally tough.

              Thanks iRabbit and slmkhoo.

I guess it is up to the student to assess and decide if they can manage H2 then since they are expected to take placement test for RA when they have not started lessons for Y5.

Let’s say if a Y5 student takes BCME and get selected for RA Bio.
Does its means they will be doing CME in H2 and then RA for Bio? Then when comes to promotion exams, will they take H2 or RA Bio exam?

Let’s assume if they are promoted to Y6, will it still be called RA Bio or H3 Bio?
During A levels, will they need to do both H2 and H3 Bio exams?

Sorry, this RA program is new to me so trying to understand more.

You can roughly gauge based on overall standing in the school. E.g. if about 80% of the cohort gets A in that H2 subject, and the student is usually in the top 30%, then there's a good chance the student will get A in the exam. Not guaranteed, but a good probability if nothing goes badly wrong.

Let's say if a Y5 student takes BCME and get selected for RA Bio.

For classes, they will take the non-RA subjects with the rest of the JC, and be taught Bio with other students takeing RA Bio. For promo, I can't remember now, but likely the normal H2 exam as well as an additional RA exam. Hope someone else can confirm. At the end of Y6, the student will take the H2 Bio exam.

RA and H3 are completely separate things. A student may do RA in one subject, and H3 in another. He may do both in the same subject, or not take any H3 at all. The RA classes will just continue from Y5, and students who choose to take H3 will have those classes at other times, often later in the day, and some are external.

H3 exams may be mid-Y6, I think, depending on whether they are taught in the JC or external. The internal ones would have the exams at the end of the A level exam period (this means that students taking H3 may end their A levels a few days later than everyone else!) All these details will be provided when the time comes to select an H3.

Don't worry, I asked all these questions too when my daughter was in Y4.

                  Thanks so much 🙂

Just to ensure I understand, so means if student takes RA Bio in Y5 and continues to Y6 and also take H3 in Bio in Y6. So in this scenario, it will means that student will need take 2 exams during A levels > 1 for RA Bio and 1 for H3 Bio?

A level cert will show the below?
RA Bio will be given ABCD grades and contribute to rank points
H3 Bio will only be given distinction/credit/pass etc..

I always think that RA is unique to RI so it is internal and not tested in A levels.

My child is taking both Chem and Bio Ra .There is no extra RA paper taken during the exams.

                        Does it mean that

                        1)
if u were to take RA (Bio),

u will be highly favored upon,
to be chosen (selected) for H3 (Bio) ?

                        2)

Do all RA (Bio) students qualify for H3 (Bio) ?

                        Example

                        say,
there are Total 100 JC1 students,
taking Bio (RA), out of the entire 1200 JC1 cohort.

                        So, all these 100
Bio (RA) pupils will end up doing H3 (Bio) ?
