Me Time!

@doodbug It’s a stage, and it’s well to anticipate the need to adjust and let go. When they are students, you still have the expectation that they will come home again; when they are married, you know (and hope!) that they won’t come home again! At least not permanently!

Most of our children have grown up, so we now have more freedom and time for ourselves. My friends are travelling more these days. Last time it was used to be mostly family trips are now often with friends too.
Our conversations tend be on health, travel and skincare. Aging can be a little depressing at times. It is important to find friends to talk to and things to keep ourselves engaged.

@PiggyLalala I find that having contact with people younger than us also helps. Mixing only with people our own age, the conversations can be rather restricted in topic! We have regular contact with a group of 30-somethings, and it’s really nice to see them go through life with small kids etc (and thank my lucky stars that all that is behind me!). Volunteering also helps to add more different people and groups into the mix.

By virtue of my workplace and nature of work, thankfully I do have exposure to young people, their challenges and how they think. I really enjoy interacting with young people - it helps me break out of my narrow generational perspectives which do creep in thanks to social media algorithms and the natural company we keep with peers.
I value church too, as a means to live out the christian faith in action individually and as a family. I didn’t use to think of church this way when I was younger, when it was more of fulfilling my own spiritual needs.
Ironically, we travelled so much as a family during the kids’ schooling years and now that the kids are older, and also possibly due to the intensity of work (when I 1st started work we did not have laptops so a holiday was a real holiday whereas now, we check emails on the go all the time) I am finding it harder to get away, even though we are now free from child-raising activities!

We recently went on a 1-week vacation just after the US Pres made some of his announcements that keep the world in a state of anxiety and shock. So my husband spent some time working and messaging clients - luckily we had a couple of long-ish train rides and we hadn’t planned to do much anyway. He does limit the checking of his messages to short periods a few times a day when we are on vacation, and I’ve accepted that it’s not possible for him to completely cut off from work, given the work that he does. I do remind him when he’s starts constantly checking, though! For me, I can’t do my work while in certain places, so I generally just load up on ebooks and read when my husband is busy. You may find it easier if you later on decide to change to some other kind of work.

@slmkhoo Haha, I don’t think I can easily find a group of 30-year-olds to hang out with. Even if I could, we would likely have nothing much to talk about. But I’ve been thinking about trying some volunteer work- hopefully something new and fun. Does anyone know about community gardening? Do you need to be good at gardening to join?

No, it doesn’t work after a few seconds after posting! That’s one of the things I would hope can be changed on this board.
