I’m a member of the KiasuParents team — recently we held a KiasuParents Huddle webinar, to help families thrive during the last lap of the PSLE.
There were some good questions that we couldn’t cover during our webinar, and we’d like to pick up where we left off!

The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) oral exam has finally concluded. On the second day, during the Chinese oral paper, the topic centered on a family outing to the zoo. At first glance, the theme seemed simple and heartwarming, but in the actual exam setting, some students experienced another layer of cruelty.A friend told me about her experience as an oral examiner at a neighborhood primary school. She met a young girl. The second question was: besides the zoo, where else have you been? The girl answered that she had been to an indoor playground. The third question asked whether she thought overseas travel was better, or staying in Singapore. Once again, her answer revolved around the indoor playground.
The examiner gently reminded the girl that she had already mentioned the indoor playground. The girl paused, then softly explained: “Teacher, my mother said we don’t have much money, so she only took me to the indoor playground.” At that moment, the air seemed to freeze—it was heartbreaking.
These kinds of questions may appear ordinary and harmless on the surface, but they conceal underlying social inequalities. The exam setters might assume such topics are ones everyone can talk about, yet they overlook children who grow up in special family circumstances and ignore economic differences. It is like the ancient saying, “Why not eat minced meat porridge?”—sometimes, it’s just because people fail to see the realities of others.
I hope that future exam setters will take more account of the diversity of students’ backgrounds, so that every question can be both warm and inclusive, allowing all children to find their own voice in the exam hall."

Hope the discussions move beyond just PSLE/AL scores and focus on choosing a school environment that holistically fits a child’s interest - few other factors to consider would be the range of sports, CCAs, culture as well as actual feedback from existing students in the school

Would encourage everyone to attend the Open House events, and talk to existing students! After Results Day, it can feel like a scramble to visit remaining open houses and make quick decisions.
On that note: I have a good impression of Christ Church Sec (COP around 17-18), so feel free to ping me about this school.
It’d be great if other parents with kids in less “famous” secondary schools can post here as well! It’s a safe space for discussions

In my case (about 2 years ago), we gave up affiliation and took our chances on a neighbourhood sec school, because we had such a good experience at the open house.
We only had the energy to visit three schools after the PSLE results — Christ Church (Anglican school), Deyi (known for badminton), and Whitley (convenient for those in the Bishan area). I have to say that all the students we encountered were helpful and welcoming.
Another tip: if you live along TEL, that opens up quite a few convenient options — Thomson to Woodlands is about a 15-20min ride.
