      JSC:
      Hi niece of talk_aboutstudies,

Tks for taking time in enlightening us parents with your insightful comments, especially I guess now you are having your SA ?

I heard your school will be undergoing upgrading from end 2010 to end 2012, does the school explain to the students/parents of this and also where will the students go to for those affected facilities to be upgraded (the basketball court, netball court, field.) ?
And how about other facilities. CVPS is quite small compared to other pri school but the population is rather big. Is there constrain in using facilities such as the computer lab, etc ?

I also heard that CVPS just had new principal and VP. How do you feel about the new principal ? Is he doing something new and how is he compared to previous Mr Govindan ?

Also, your school is having double session. Do you find it less conducive to have lessons in the afternoon session compared to the morning session ? IS CVPS going into single session soon ?

And does the school separate students into top, average and below average classes ? I understand that disparity among students could be big.

And do you or your friends go to Morning Star Student Care centre ? If yes, do you have any comments on the centre and the teachers there ?

Lastly, I am curious to know why you could not get into Nan Chiau if your father is old boy there (which would qualify you under phase 2A2), which is before the parent volunteer phase 2B.

      To any other parents,
Strange we do not hear anything about Rivervale Pri School and Nan Chiau. Hope to hear some soon.

      Tks.
Hello! I created an account for myself but forgot to check back here.

Yes, my school is going to be upgraded. However, the letter that was given last year did not mention anything except that we are going to receive another letter this year end(i think).Hence, I cannot answer your question.

There is no constrain using the facilities.Though our school is small,we have three computer labs and usually if your teacher had booked before hand, the class should be able to use it. However, there are some constrains when it comes to year-end when the p6s have finished their PSLE and when the other levels have finished their year-end exams. As we still have weeks before the holidays, teachers would typically book the labs for \"free time\". Also, on wednesdays, the computer lab is open to pupils at a certain time, but only to do the LEAD assignments.
Generally, I feel that we have not met with any problems with the lack of facilities yet.

Yes, we just had a new principal and vice-principal. To be truthful, as us P6s have already \"bonded\" with Mr Govindan, to adapt to Mr Chua is quite a hard task. Mr Chua is a very strict principal, who maintains the fact that school rules are supposed to be kept, no matter how silly it seems. Mr Govindan used to allow us to run in the parade ground during recess to play. Now, however, Mr Chua prohibits running in school except during PE lessons and at the field. If we,p6s, are caught running,we are reprimanded by our teachers and supposedly, sent to the principal's office. However, the irony is, this rule is only applied to us p6s, with the reason being(sort of) that we p6s are disturbing the other pupils. As my class and 602 is on the ground floor, we can hear the racket caused by the p2s and p4s during recess.Very distracting for you can see the younger pupils running outside your class.
Comparing Mr Govindan and Mr Chua, Mr Govindan is a \"fatherly\" person,he's gentle yet strict. He doesn't scold but \"reprimand\" you in a soft tone. He's a very soft-spoken,nice,fatherly and gentle person.I remember being close to tears when we said farewell to him.He made an impact,no matter how small, on most of the p6s, and possibly, most of the p5s.

Yes, my school is going single session soon. I find it much more conducive to have lessons in the afternoon.Reasons being that in the morning, you are VERY sleepy, especially on cold rainy days. In the afternoon, you are very much awake. However, sometimes, the heat in the afternoon is a killer. On those kind of days, my form teacher would bring my class to the music studio to have lessons and to cool off.

Yes, we have two top classes (301,302,401,402,501,502,601,602) and for the sixes level, we have two foundation classes (609A and B) and six average classes.

No, my friends and I do not go to student care. Reason being, we live either opposite the school, next to the school, across the streets or we take buses home.

I have no idea why I couldn't get into Nan Chaiu. No use broading over the reason why anyway, its six years ago! 😎

I'm sorry if I could not provide you with all the answers you wanted though. Hope my post would answer most or some of them.:)

Oh,and we are having an Open House in July. Date not confirmed. I'm hopping I would be chosen as a tour guide and not as an emcee. Speech and drama pupils are chosen for being tour guides and emcees.:)

          Hi calculator,

The date has been confirmed, 24 July 2010. I do not know the actual timing though. The timing they stated in the circular given to ask on Monday said that for selected pupils to report to schol at 8 am.
I'm a selected pupil, probably to be the emcee. Hope I can see you there!

                  Hi there,

I'm a secondary student who is an alumni of Rivervale primary.

After seeing your post, i felt the urge to reply.

First of all, i would like to state that: one, it has been 4 years since i left the school, thus i am not sure how it has changed over the past few years since the new principal came. two: my views may be bias, after all, i am speaking for my primary school.

Being a student in Rivervale has been the most wonderful and enriching experience of 6 years. It has build the foundation of what i am today. There are many opportunities in school that students are exposed to, in arts, academic, character building and other skills, which can be found in the school website.

Some competitions which i have took part in and won something are Odyssey of the mind, math/science olympiad, other subject-based competition organised by other schools, dance competitions, bookworm short stories writing competition and etc.

The school is currently teaching this school of thought called the habits of mind. These 16 habits aim to teach and develop one's attitude towards learning and critical thinking.

Depending on the kind of teacher you get, lessons are usually engaging and interesting. I have to say that i am lucky to have gotten teachers who had the real patience and willingness to teach. The teachers have taught me not only by text, but also by example.

Referring to livewith_vanilla's post, you cannot guarantee the kind of teacher you will get, the negative example of your above-mentioned tutor exist in most if not all schools.

I do have experience with negative teachers, but that was 2 teachers out of my entire 6 years. Thinking back, I do not think this is a totally bad thing, I consider this to be a learning experience. I probably had not realised then, but i have subconsciously learnt to be independent in my studies and be responsible for my own learning, instead of relying completely on my teachers. Every obstacle met is a lesson learnt.

Subjects in curriculum are English, math, science, MT, PE, health education, art and craft, and HMT in upper primary. I am not sure if there has been any additions or subtraction.

As for CCAs, Rivervale do have quite a variety of them, do check out the website. I was in contemporary dance myself. The experience i had was quite hilarious in a way, although i do not understand why, there might have been a reason for it, of my 6 years in dance, i learnt classical ballet for 2 years, modern dance (hiphop) for 2 years, and reverting back to a more classic kind of contemporary dance. I think it has changed again and is now slightly different from when i was in it.

Depending on the CCA one is in, there will be many interesting events along the way. For example, if im not wrong, last year or 2 years ago, a group of contemporary dancers went to Genting to perform because they won some competition, one of my junior in dance told me of it. Also, when i was in p5, there was this 小小企业家competition airing in channel 8. A group of my friends took part in it, when it ended, they set up the entrepreneur club in school. 🙂

There also camps to toughen the students up, to train them to be more disciplined and independent. Primary 5 camp is the norm. This year, they have just introduced camps for p4, which will be held at Jalan Betera Campsite.

Besides the usual local school trips, the school also have overseas immersion trips. Much can be seen from the banners hung on the fences outside the school. They have trips to vietnam, thailand, cambodia, malaysia, china, japan and i think there'll be more.

In my years in Rivervale, i went to kluang in pri2, malacca in pri3, shanghai & nanjing in pri4, and yunnan in pri6. All of which have been eye-opening experiences that have taught me beyond the images and texts from books and internet. There are advantages about going on school trips like these, apart from the sightseeing, we get to interact with the local schools and families there in the country, exposing ourselves to different environments and cultures each and everytime.

                  Now a question for you,

what is the deciding factor that you're looking for in your school of choice?

If it's the statistics that you want, the school website speaks for itself. Be it academic or non-academic, Rivervale has been doing fairly well these recent years.

In addition, instead of thinking about the perfect school, what about the 'perfect' school for your child? Which do you think will suit the needs and wants of your child better?

If you have started PV, i think it is best to feel for yourself the kind of learning environment in both the schools.

I'm not even sure if anyone has the patience to read the full length of my post, but what I'm trying to say is that whatever school it is, at any level of education, schools are platforms for students where their talents are nurtured and character is built and cultivated.

Ultimately, despite the many differences, pros and cons, all schools have the same goal in mind. Quoting the site admin, ChiefKiasu, popularity does not equate quality.

Nevertheless, I wish you all the best in choosing the school you want for your child 🙂
