Dear maths guru
Good morning.
Please help me on this question:
Harry and Sally were at a party. Harry shook hands with 4 times as many boys as girls while Sally shook hands with 5 times as many boys as girls.
How many boys and how many girls were there at the party?
Thank you.

I have one qn.
Can someone help me?
The no. shld be placed in a pyramid form.
TX
Row 1 2
Row 2 4 6 8
Row 3 10 12 14 16 18
Row 4 20 22 24 26 28 30 32
What is the largest no on Row 10?
288 is the largetst no. in a certain row. Which row is it? -

if you think about the nature of the number pattern,I have one qn.

Row 1 2

Row 4 20 22 24 26 28 30 32
What is the largest no on Row 10?
288 is the largetst no. in a certain row. Which row is it?
1 + 3 + 5 + 7, ....
one might be reminded of square numbers because the sum of consecutive odd numbers from 1 is a square number.
And then notice that the last number of each row is just twice a square number (square of the row number).
so the largest no in row 10 is 2 times the square of 10 which is 200.
288 / 2 = 144. sqrt 144 = 12. therefore 288 is the largest number in row 12. -

Lets assume he has 35 units of money.
he spent 7 units on clothes, left 28 units.
Now he has $152 which equates to a certain whole number units, and we know he will spent a multiple of 5 units on food.
Because 152 = 8 X 19, the only possible value of units left which equates to 152 is 8 units, with each unit corresponding to $19, because 28-8 units = 20 units a multiple of 5.
Therefore amount of money spent on food => 20 units = $160 -

The pattern lies with the last number.I have one qn.

row 1 2 +6
row 2 8 +10
row 3 18 +14
row 4 32
1. the next row's increase is done by adding 4 to the previous row's increase
2. the next row's last number is done by adding the previous row's last number to the next row's increase
Therefore in
row 5, largest number = 32+18=50
row 6, largest number = 50+22=72
row 7, largest number = 72+26=98
row 8, largest number = 98+30=128
row 9, largest number = 128+34=162
row 10, largest number = 162+38=200//
200+42=242 row 11
242+46=288 row 12//
this is my mtd, not sure if there is any simpler mtd though....hehe.. -

Easiest method ... Divide all numbers in pattern by 2
last nos. In each row will be
Row 1 = 1
Row 2 = 4
Row 3 = 9
Row 4 = 16
.
.
Row 10 = 100
Now multiply by 2 ... 100 x 2 = 200
Now if last no. is 288
Half it we get 144 ... Square root of 144 is 12
So , if the last no of a row is 288, the row no is row 12
