Please help me solve the following Question.


There is no answer because it was one of the 30 questions in NUSHS mathematical Olympiad this year. I guess it is $37, but no confident at all.

$37 is the lowest amount of money Mr Tan
will needs to spend.

By spending
1) 1 set of (11 chocs + 9 candies) => $15
2) 2 sets of (7 chocs + 9 candies) => $11x 2 = $22

Total chocs = 11 + 14 = 25
Total candies = 9 + 18 = 27
Each student will get 1 piece of chocolate and 1 piece of candy.( 2 pieces of candy left for Mr Tan to enjoy)

Minimum Amt spent = $15 + $22 = $37

Still confused...in problem it is not stated that Point P is the mid point of the circle. Then how can we assume?Still tht 80 X 2 is confusing me....Please explain

See if can understand this ... if Kumar jogged 80m when he & Clara jogged 1/2 the circumference of track; then he must have jogged 160m when he and Clara jogged the whole circumference of the track.
Underlying assumption is the speed of Kumar and Clara do not change.

so, ? = full circumference
ie.,(80 X 2) = 160m from the point of K's journey...

For meeting problems; time taken us fixed provided Kumar and Clara leaves at the same time.

You can check as shown below ....

When they meet for the 1st time
Kumar : 80m (from M to P)
Clara : 100m (from N to P)
Total distance => 160m (1/2 of circumference)

When they meet for 2nd time
Kumar : 160m ( from P to Q - clockwise direction)
Clara : 200m (from P to Q - anti clockwise direction)
Total distance => 360m (Circumference)
