      Hi Mummies

How do you teach ur child spelling? Mine is in K1 this year and spelling is part of the course. :?:
Both my kids have a very strong foundation in phonics. They know how to listen to the sounds of the word and figure out of to spell it. This technique makes spelling very easy for them, especially for my 6 year old girl who has spelling since K1.

The following was her spelling list for this term.

      3 April
      1.blind
      2.deaf
      3.wheelchair
      4.handicap

      17 April
      1.gravity
      2.ramp
      3.crutches
      4.braille

      30 April
1.The girl wears a hearing aid.
      2.The boy cannot walk.

      15 May
1.He needs crutches to help him walk.
2.The blind use braille to help them read.

She knew how to spell almost all the words even before she started to practice writing them. Not all the words can be spelled accurately using phonics, but phonics will help her to spell most of the word correctly, and so she only has to memorize a small part of the word. Being kiasu, I still make her practice writing once every day, starting from one week before the test.

It also helps that she is reading very widely.

I made sure that she reads consistently everyday. Being able to read very well means that she is familiar with many commonly used words.

Parents should make sure that the child knows phonics very well, and reads consistently, then spelling and writing will be very easy.

hi, i'm wondering if anyone sends your child to pcf kindergarten @ jurong west st 64 - Blk 665A & BLk 665B from nursery to kindergarten 2.

& any comments abt the kindergarten? Are the teachers well prepared for p1.
        Checkout my blog :

        http://tamarindvillage.blogspot.com/2009/01/pcf-kindergarten.html

My boy is attending K1 at 665. My older girl attends 662. There is a lot of emphasis on reading in both English and Chinese, which I think is good. I will be getting back his worksheets next week, will include the photos in my blog later.

They have not started spelling yet. I am not worried, because according to early childhood education experts, MOE guideline is that preschools should not have spelling šŸ˜‰ I remember reading somewhere in this forum. Personally I do not like my boy to be tested on spelling at such a young age, he is born near the end of year, so he is only a little over 4 years old when he started to attend K1. They do worksheets regularly, and my boy practice writing everyday, and that is good enough for me.

My boy only attended half a year at 665, I am not sure what they are going to teach later. My girl's PCF at 662 certainly prepares the children very well for P1.

My girl is currently attending K2 PCF BISHAN at Blk 219 . Yes , it is true . My girl only has English Spelling and Chinese spelling once a week. They do not learn Maths & Han Yu Pin Lin at all . A lot of parents are very worried for their children when enter to Primary 1 . As a result, lots of parents have to send their child for tution . Just wonder , what is the point of sending to Kindergarten ?

        hi rosmary,

        thanks for the info! šŸ˜„

that's what i heard, parents need to send their kids for lotsa other enrichment classes. šŸ˜ž so u sending ur girl for other enrichment classes? cos i heard from a neighbour that her son got a rude shock when he enters P1 as he does not know a lot of things. šŸ˜ž

My friend sends her boy to attend a private kindergarten which costs her about $600 every month. The Chinese teacher told her that she must send her boy to Chinese enrichment classes outside. My friend is very angry. Imagine she has to pay more on top of that $600 ! Another mommy I know sends her boy to a prestigious kindergarten in holland road. She was also told by the Chinese teacher to send her boy to enrichment class.

I am also sending my boy to Berries Chinese enrichment class, which costs around $390 a term (12 weeks). But his kindergarten costs me only $107 a month šŸ˜‰ I sent him to Berries purely because I am kiasu, Berries is the best Chinese enrichment class out there. No other pre-schools can provide the same type of standard. I am perfectly happy with what he is learning in his PCF K1 class (see the link above).

Whatever kindergarten a child goes to, parents should try to understand what the child is learning. Sometimes it may be that the child is simply not learning what the teacher is trying to teach. Then the parents should teach the child at home or if they are unable to do so, they will have to send the child to enrichment classes.

As I have mentioned earlier, every PCF kindergarten has a different standard. My girl's PCF kindergarten has a very high standard. Parents should not make generalizations about PCF.

Wow the spelling words are difficult for preschoolers. I don't think I can teach my boy spelling base on phonics sound since I don't know them well.
Guess got to use the writting method.
Will try out when he had spelling.

          Thanks for the advise.

My kids have a very strong foundation in phonics, they are able to read very well. My 6 year old girl is writing in sentences and has no problem with spelling, thanks to phonics.

Your kids' kindergarten probably did not teach phonics in depth. Knowing just the letter sounds alone is not enough. It is also very important to practice constantly at home to make sure that the child knows the phonics techniques very well. Otherwise even attending phonics course does not mean that the child will be good at phonics.

I was pleasantly surprised when my girl told me that her Chinese teacher at her PCF kindergarten gave her a dictionary !

It is a English to Chinese, and Chinese to English dictionary. Not those kiddy types, no pictures at all. It is about 6 to 8 cm thick !

My girl said that her teacher's friend had excess stocks, so her teacher gave every child in the class a dictionary.

I am so impressed ! I never have a teacher who gave me a dictionary before. I bought a Chinese dictionary for myself when I was in P2, and that was the best tool for me to learn Chinese šŸ˜„

She attends the PCF kindergarten at 662B Jurong West šŸ˜„

Her English teacher Jenny, is one of the best pre-school teacher I have every encountered. She is soft spoken, yet very firm, and able to effectively discipline all the 18 children in the class. Her teaching style is excellent, she exposes the children to a wide range of topics from space to disabilities, etc. She handles children with a wide range of abilities very well. If there is a best pre-school teacher award, I will certainly vote for her !

I don't know her Chinese teacher Miss Lin very well, because she only started to teach them this year. I spoke to her yesterday during the parents-teacher meeting, and I find her very pleasant.

Yesterday I found out from Teacher Jenny that they are going to teach multiplication and division after the June holidays. They certainly prepare the children very well for P1 šŸ˜‰

                      Hi Tamarind

Thanks for the info. Ive just called 662B on the registration coming up and was told that it was full. Now in a dilemma on which other branch to place her.

                        Hi Tamarind

Very impressed indeed as the same thing didn't happen in the PCF in Pasir Ris. I was really in a shock when my kids moved to P1 as they were struggling to cope, especially with Chinese. I didn't send them to any enrichment class during their kindergarten days.

By the way, how do you teach your kids phonics or where do you send them? I'm very poor in this area myself.
