Hi isabella.zola,nmhmum:
Just want to share my experience with Han. My dd has been with them for two years. Actually I do not really find them very fantastic, but the strange thing is that my dd can always produce good results during her exams. I guess they may have a way of teaching that actually helps my daughter to do well in her exams. I will continue to put her there for next year and monitor how it goes.
Hi nmhmum,
Could you give more details on why you do not find Han good? I am not a Chinese but my husband is and we want our kids to take up Chinese. So I am really looking for a centre that will help a child who does not have much exposure to Chinese. My child not in P1 yet.
The reason why I say Han is not so good because I realised that my daughter relies alot on han yu pin yin to recognise words and if those words do not have any han yu pin yin on it, she will have difficulty reading the chinese words. I have put her in Han for almost 2 years there and actually I expect that she should at least know how to read the words without the help of Han Yu Pin Yin, but she still have difficulties in recogising words. Furthermore, she told me of all the subjects, she hates Chinese the most. I assume that a good tuition centre should actually makes the child likes the subject but not hate it. But strange is that my daughter can perform very well in her exams and not only that, she is put in the 2nd best class for her Chinese. :? -

I put him in the holiday classes to try out first before I decide it but it seem that their timing cannot match. So maybe I would need to see his usual performance.
No, she did not. Actually the normal class do teach them to write compo but maybe not in depth. Will see her results first. If need, then will put her in the creative writing course. By the way did you put your child in their creative writing course?
But overall, every lesson, they are teaching them the basic and how to construct the sentence. -

Hi nmhmum,
Juz wonder what level is your girl. My son is P4 now and been studying there for 2 years. He started with poor Chinses grade and hate chinese but now he's doing very well in paper 2. So far, he didn't need Han Yu Pin Yin to read chinese words. In Han's worksheet, only new words were given Han Yu Pin Yin for them to pronounce correctly.
The only problem for my son is his composition, he manage to get a passing mark only and this drag his overall mark down to band 2 for chinese (he scored almost full mark for his paper 2). Ever talked to his teacher, she suggest to get him read more chinese books and sign up the holiday composition class. -

My girl is in P2 this year. I know that the first two years, they have more han yu pin yin to help them, after that will be more words without the aid of Han Yu Pin yin. That is the part I am more worrying. Anyway, I will see how its goes too. If her grades does not drop, I will continue to put her in Han. By the way, I heard that there are different standards in different centres? Which centre did you put your son in? -

Oh that is quite strange maybe they make her learn by hard quite a lot so she does not like it but can do well? But I think it is important for a child to enjoy the subject. Are you planning to switch centres or stay? -

I think I will still try out Han since my daughter's results is still good. However, if her school tests and exams results drop, then I will plan to switch to a new one.
