PSLE COP 2010

Yes. He put HCI as first choice, and both his parents are Alumni of HCJC. We guessed that was the reason why he got his case approved faster than others. You have some disadvantages by not putting your DS as 1st choice but that doesn't mean you have no chance at all, especially when your DS' score is very close to the COP.huge huge mistake, i know....shouldn't have listened to dh who suggested it. not pushing the blame to him ...i should have been more diligent to read all the threads carefully but i guessed the 100 over pages of posts and the late nights have taken its toll....
hi ycpang,
i bet your son's friend must have either put HCI as the first choice or was a top athelete or some other special talents to contribute?
I give you some examples: If there is only one slot left and 2 students with same T-score appeal, the prioirty will go to the one who put HCI as first choice. However, if there are two slots left, both of them will get in. Different schools handle appeal cases differently. So far my observation is HCI appeal cases are mostly based on merit, and of course some other factors will also kick-in such as Alumni, rank of your choice, special talents etc.
My DS has 3 friends who were successful in their appeals last year. 2 with one point short to COP, one above the COP but decided to give up his DSA in another school and join HCI. Wish you a lot of good luck in your appeal! -
HI Ycpang
thks v much! i certainly need lots of luck!!! and btw, though i wish i can immediately fly to HCI, i can’t cause i am working… -
INNOVATE:
Both HCI and RI are known to hve turned down appeal cases for non top choice applicants. This rule has been in existence for many years. Of course exceptional cases do exist every year ie national atheletes or top national honours in maths/science olympiads. As for NJC, understand that the appeal committe does consider each case on its own merit even though advantage is given to pupils who opted the sch as its top choice.
HCI do accept non-1st choice appeal. My DS case last yr was a gd example. We didn't apply for any IP schs at all cos' wasn't sure if IP is suitable for DS. When we get to know more abt IP, we regretted our decision. So before the posting result was out, we appealed to HCI. On posting result day, we appealed to DHS. Both our appeals were successful even though we didn't choose HCI/DHS at all. DS t-score was 257+2. So octopusmum, yr DS stands a gd chance. All the best to u.
How are you so sure HCI does not accept non-1st choice appeal and NJC will?Zann:
In octopusmum's situation, had already informed her in the forum that it was a bid mistake putting RI as her top choice with score of 255+2.
Should hve place HCI or NJC as the top choice instead and put another good school as second choice. A number of parents in this forum are very well-informed and offered excellent advices to parents. Is up to individuals to discern such infos.
Hope she is successful in her appeal to NJC-good and neaer to her house. -
hi pinky88
thks for sharing… i guess your ds got in because his score actually exceeded the COP by 2 points so his chances r v high. comparatively, my son’s score is lower. i will still try nevertheless. -
octopusmum:
I dun know if it helps to top up your appeal with a personal appeal letter. That's what I did last year cos' my DS case was we didn't opt for the sch at all, so I need to at least explain to them & oso to show our sincerity. We await to hear gd news fm u....gd luck:)hi pinky88

Dun b disheartened if you do not hear fm HCI by this wk cos' last yr we only rec'd gd news fm them after X'mas but DHS was quick juz 2 days after appeal. I still rmbr we were holidaying in Malacca when we rec'd the gd news fm DHS on Xmas eve. -
octopusmum:
octopusum, I am sorry to hear that your ds missed the COP by a just dec points. I agree with ycpang that you should try to appeal today instead of tomorrow. It shows how keen you are about the school. If you can't make it yourself, can ask someone to help to go down with your son?HI Ycpang

From what I was told, the school will need you to make a decision rather qucikly so that they can prepare a letter for you to secure the signature of the school you are posted to....Hi Pinky88

appealing to two...果然是KS本色 -
For those who want to appeal. You still have to report to the school you are posted to so as to secure a place for your child next year. Do not buy uniforms or books. The appealing result will be out on 29 dec and the school that accept your appeal will do the transfer for you.

Oh...I rec call fm DHS first, so went to collect the transfer letter then left it at VS (my DS 1st choice) for the principal to sign. When on my way to collect the signed doc fm VS the next day, rec call fm HCI that appeal was successful. So after discussion with hubby & some of our frenz, we decided on HCI. Went to HCI to collect the letter, went bk to VS to get the principal to sign, at the same time collect the DHS letter bk. The staff was confused by us....ask us which is the final one....haha. After tat, went bk to DHS to return the letter telling them we're sorri. To & fro so many schs but it's worth the effort.Hi Pinky88

But HCI either has limited vacancies or is very 'hot' cos' when the lady staff called me asking if we'r still keen, I told her to give me a bit of time to consider. In less than 5 mins, she called me bk to get an ans saying if I not keen, they will give the place to the next person. Whereas DHS not so kan cheong....so it really depends on the sch whether u need to give a reply immediately. But at the end of it, the signed copy of the transfer letter is still the final one.
