Xin Min primary had balloting in 2006 for 1-2 km and balloting in 2007 for <1 km. The no. of vacancies this year has been reduced by 30. My teacher friend from Rosyth advised me that Xin Min is quite a good neighbourhood school. If you are within 1 km, suggest you go for the balloting. Think even if balloting, the rate of success is still reasonably good. Holy Innocent has balloting for < 1km last year. Success rate is about 50%.

BTW, dont understand how your alumni plan failed. Din hear any change in MOE rules. Alumni registration is under Phase 2A and not Phase 2B, and the registration closing date is today 11 Jul 08.

        Dear Mum2Gals,

Appreciate & Thanks for the info on Xinmin. Regarding your quest, SA alumni includes their pri,sec & JC. My wife was formerly from SAJC. According to the alumni 2 months back, this year MOE strictly enforce that only members from Pri alumni qualify for 2B. We were caught in the cold and our 2B plan just evaporated into thin air… Thanks again.

          Hi Chief Kiasu,

Would like to hear yr opinion. I was accepted as parent volunteer for both River Valley & Holy Innocents, we are currently residing at Telok Blangah. We will be upgrading to a bigger flat hence thinking of which school to choose before we source our flat. Understand that Holy Innocents is a SAP sch. Besides offering Higher Chinese in Primary 1 which normal sch don’t offer, what other difference is there between a SAP sch & a normal sch? Which school will you choose, River Valley OR Holy Innocents? Pls advise a.s.a.p. Thanks.

I personally would prefer Holy Innocents, given that River Valley does not have any affiliation to the famed seondary school. But HI is a very hot school... you have better make sure your flat is <1km to it if you want a sure thing.

              Chief Kiasu,
What is the diff between a SAP sch & a normal sch? Any past years PSLE results or feedbacks of Holy Innocents? How do you compare normal Sec with Holy Innocents Sec? Though there's an afiliation, the sec must also be abv average, what you think? Will you put yr child's sch in priority or yr choice of flats, meaning will you sacrifice for yr kids and shift to another district which you're not familar with? This decision making has been troubling me b'cos my office is very near Telok Blangah where I'm staying. (Sometimes when my child is sick, I can even rush home during lunch) Both my hubbie's family & mine are staying at this area. Property value near Telok Blangah is also quite stable at all times(value will only goes up steeply hence nt so risky) and demand is high especially IR is on the way. Initially, I only registered for River Valley PV and was sourcing for flats at this area. It was only later that I realised the importance of schs. with affiliation. Holy Innocents strike my mind as it is a SAP sch with affiliation and mixed gender.(I have a boy & gal) I registered for Holy Innocents PV on the v last day. Another worry is, will property value in Hougang be stagnent as NEW TOWN like Sengkang & Punggol is developing? Will I be taking a risk? Or should I consider getting a flat in Sengkang or Punggol then source a gd sch there? Any suggestion for location of flats near MRT wif gd schs w/o any PV? I am very... troubled abt this choosing of schs & flats issue, pls help!!!

(Pardon me for asking yr opinion for schs, then flats.... it may seems quite contradicting, I believe alot of parents are residing in order to have a better chance of getting into choice of sch. Here, I'm no difference just that I would like to minimise the loss on future flat disposal instead of being blinded by just the sch alone.) :?

From what I hear about Holy Innocents High…the school is only so-so (on the average). My niece is now in that school and doesn’t feel much pressure there to do "fantastically" well. The Primary school is SAP.

Ultimately, I think alot depends on the child and also how they get along with their teachers. Each school have their set of good and "bad" teachers…different people will have different opinion…while there is some where although teachers can be good but students are not that studious…

As for flats, prices of flats in Hougang is starting to stabilized abit. Alot of sellers want a certain price for their flats now, and alot of buyers are expecting a lower price. (I know cos now I am looking for a place to buy in Hougang) Alot of prices are abit unrealistic (if you look at the past HDB transaction) and the request for HIGH cash top up. Just be more wary.

HIPs has always had the need to ballot of Phase 2C. If you intend to do PV and if you are staying within 1km…chances is that you are pretty "safe" to get a school position there. Alot of parents are not doing PV at HIPs because most living around the area are "lazy" (they are relying on the fact of Phase 2C within 1km and are lazy to even bother to try doing PVs) and some are mainly catholics (so they go direct to Phase 2B).

Do note that HIPs is doing higher chinese.

**My meaning of "lazy" is that they are the older fashion aunty or uncle or those who isn’t bothered about the school phase system. Hence unwillingness to do parents volunteering to secure a place. No offense hor =P
