I agreed what greenbean2011 has mentioned via RC do stand a higher chance to register popular schools within the RC zone.
Higher chance compared to which group? Do you have any personal experience to substantiate your statement? -
qms:
If the chances are so high... we'll be seeing long Qs of people wanting to join RCs... which is not the case.hamster:

When it comes down to P2B balloting... still LPPL... -

......
click here, can check which primary school falls under which GRC ?
http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/primary-one-registration/listing-by-grc/
to play safe, to increase chance - perhaps one spouse do rc, the other spouse do pv ?
aren't they planning to redraw the zones for the coming election?
any impact :? -

Yah heard this from my friend. As they are registering this yr, so they tried to talk to the school, the chairman,etc... and the latest I heard was the chairman assured them they will get a chance under phase 2B.aren't they planning to redraw the zones for the coming election?
any impact :?
Hope everything works out great for them as it's crazy to be contributing and be affected due to the change in electoral boundary. -

Agreed with you.Your cousin is misinformed. The school does not allocate any number of places to any group, be it a community leader (in an RC) or a PV. There are x number of places in Phase 2B and all RC/NC/PV/church/clan come under that phase. Should there be more applicants than there are places, distance, and possibly balloting, comes into play.
So for example, there are 100 places in P2B. There are 5 RCs, 50 PVs and 50 church, making 105. Regardless of whether you are RC, PV or church, they look at all 105 applicants and give spaces to those who live within 1km, followed by 1-2km and lastly by 2km. Should there be more applicants within the distance category than places, they ballot. So there's no need to do both community work and PV - it puts you in exactly the same situation.
Also, you cannot volunteer in any RC or NC that you choose. It MUST be the one that you live in. And there is no minimum of 3 years. The specified criteria is 1 year as Executive member. It takes between 6 months to a couple of years to become an EM from an Observer, depending on vacancies within the RC/NC and how active you are.
You cousin must live within 1km of ACPS and SCGS such that they were not subjected to balloting within P2B. Else, they must have been very lucky that there were enough places for everyone that year. I'm afraid the situation is very different now.
perhaps it is because SCGS did not offer any PV and all vacancies in Phase 2B naturally went to community leaders, thus the misunderstanding. -
Hi
As I did mention that via rc route stand a higher chance is becos
1. Is much easier to approach the RC.
2. If you have the time to do this, actively involved in their activities can try using the route.
Doing pv to d school of your choice, it may sound simple and easier to apply to d school. I don’t think so, some popular schools don’t even need volunteers, or some school require to go few round of interview and may not be selected.
At the end of it, regardless of which route you choose… Is no guarantee.
cos you can register the schools that fall within the GRC zone. -

Citygirl is right. I am the Vice-Chairman of a RC, I can say there's no such allocation of places specifically to RC members and all those other things mentioned. Once in P2B, all are equal and subject to MOE criteria. Pls do not circulate such unsubstantiated claims in this forum while we have tried our best to educate all concerned parents. Else our efforts will be wasted. Parents are advise to go through what we have discussed before. Tks.

she said every year - primary schools allocate a certain no. of places to rc, perhaps around 20.
can find out:-
last year, how many seats were allocated for rc, in each of these schools ?
what happens - if demand exceeds supply for rc ?
is rc given higher priority than pv ?
even though both fall under the same phase 2b?
to play safe, to increase chance - perhaps one spouse do rc, the other spouse do pv ?

It's schools within the GRC/SMC, no such thing as \"RC zone\". I agree it's not as easy as in the past as PA has tightened the rules which was a bit loose in the past, as parents have been flocking to RCs purely for P2B privilege and once their kids get in, disappeared totally. I have seen many such cases and this is really very selfish on their parts. Note that RC can only have 30 EM, so we hope to accept only committed volunteers. We usually do not reject applicants (once screened by PA), but we do hope they will come to apppreciate community service eventually and continue to volunteer even they have achieved what they wanted - P2B for their children.Hi
I agreed what greenbean2011 has mentioned via RC do stand a higher chance to register popular schools within the RC zone. However if you called the RC tell them you want to join the RC member, they will tell you is not that easy to be a member now compare to previous years. You have to be actively served the public for min 2 years before you are eligible to receive the letter for school registration.
You have to be very active in taking part of their activities, plus many meetings to attend.
If you have the time rc route is another alternative to be considered.
Pls see my earlier posts on what an Observer or EM is expected to contribute in RC. -
greenbean2011:
Min 3 yrs is totally not true. People join as Observers for a period of time before they are confirmed as EM, subject to satisfactory contribution and commitment. How long they take to become EM depends solely on them. Some can remain as Observers for many months until we decide to remove them. Why? Because they simply no show, no commitment, etc. Simple wasting all our time. In our RC, the list of observers (more than 20) is longer than EM, but during monthly meeting, I see only a handful. This is ridiculous and I will tell PA to remove those names, with letters sent to inform them.my cousin also said ... in principle, rc minimum 3 yrs.
but some parents \"cao kuan\", do < 3 yrs, ... dun know how they more or less gurantee a place for kid via rc, then stopped rc work.
You only need to be EM for 12 months to qualify for the P2B privilege. If you ask me the min. period then, I can tell you it's only 15 months or 1 yr 3 months. I get confirmed as EM in less than 3 months in 2005. I can tell if a member is committed in just 2 meetings and maybe 1 event. As I said, it all depends on you. But I don't join for that purpose and until now, I am still serving.
