If he likes swimming perhaps you can use swimming to teach ordinal numbers, it will appeal to him better.

If the number of chairs placd along its length is thrice the numbr of chairs palced along its breadth, how many chairs are placed along one of the length of the rectangle?

Length = 3u

2(B+L) = 108+4 = 112 (4 corners chairs duplicate)

2(u+3u) = 112
8u = 112
u = 14

3u = 14 * 3 = 42

Length = 42

Check:
Chairs on both lengths = 42+42 = 84
Chairs on both breaths = 14+ 14 = 28
But at the corners, they would have a common chair in each corner, so we can substract a chair from each corner, giving breadth = 12+12 = 24

Hence total number of chairs to form the rectangle = 84=24 = 108
