hi ct27, how about local Unis ? NTU, NUS, SMU, do you have any idea their selection ? How about in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, what are the subjects most suitable to choose ? Does relevant and good CCA records help ? Thanks ๐Ÿ˜„

hi ct27, thanks a lot for your comments and views. I have heard of my colleagueโ€™s sister, to apply the local Unis for Accountancy, also need to go for interview.

And if the CCA is relevant to the course in mind and achievements in the CCA in terms of National Award, Inter-School award, do you think this is a added point even for the UK system like our Singapore Unis ? Eg. infocomm or robotics ==> com science / com engrg ?

Start to think about it, why schools are asking the kids to spend 6 hours of CCA per week ? Its really a lot of time ..... :? I wonder ....

Lizawa - how old are your children?

I think the most important is still interest. And aptitude?

Our 15yo doesn't have all that much idea what she wants to do either. So she selected her combination for sec 3 based on her ability/interest.

              Hi phankao,

My children are 13 and 11.

My 13 year old boy is telling me he is interested in Humanities now, after 4 months into Sec 1. He has better results in Science and Maths. It's exploration stage for him now. I will guide him and provide advice along the way. Luckily, he / we still have plenty of time to think about it.

So is your daughter happy with her decision ?

For me, my parents don't really support what I want to do. I wanted to enter the entertainment industry, but in their opinions, it is useless and stupid. as in, it's my passion and I have talent in it, so at least they shld give me a try. They want me to be a doctor/lawyer etc you know, the typical careers parents one.

I think the mindset should be changed.

This is because universities like us ivy league/cambridge/oxford etc they not only look at your SATs and a level scores to ensure your admission to their uni. they also look at your outside achievements, community involvement. because theres not point if you are all brains but you have attitude problems and don't care about giving back to society. 6 hours its very little time already. In fact, 6 hrs is for those slack ccas, and they usually do not give much cca points. good ccas would be uniformed groups and performing arts. these ccas would take about 8hrs each week.

another thing: Many parents think that a levels scores are the only important thing to get into good unis. the answer is NO. do you know that there are many students who have PERFECT a level and SATs scores but never gets into those top US unis, unlike those who do not have perfect scores but have good records and frequent community involvement and OUTSIDE achievement?
