DS in galileo but not selected for science club despite taking selection tests in Yr 1 and Yr 2. Don't think it is auto. The converse is also true. Some in Science club didn't get into galileo program.
students in Euler program are auto in math club, there will be selection test for Euler; and those in galileo program (after selection test) auto in science clubvlim:
I would like to ask about RI CCA..
Understand that npcc, took up 2 weekdays afternoon...How about merit CCA such as Maths Club and Chess (chinese/weiqi)?? TIA

vk2010 - you are a wealth of info! Thank you very much. One more question - other than for form filing, buying books, and uniform, and maybe a speech by P, nothing else? Just two three hours at most?
if you are set on RI and will be rejecting other CO, then buy your uniform early, Shaw Centre, above Isetan, shop name BibiBaba, to avoid the year end crowd and long neck waiting for new stock
PE uniform can be purchased from the in-house Popular Bookshop at the canteen; for text books, they are in standard pack - if any books are out of stock, there is a slip in the pack that allows you to claim your stock when it arrives later, well organised.
you don't have to get everything on registration day. it can be done earlier or later
the main speech by the P is at the end of the orientation camp during the initiation rite. one of the activities during the orientation camp is the senior teach the junior how to tie a tie properly ..... and, oh, no need to buy the tie and the badge, the boys will be given the tie and wear it to the initiation ceremony, and the form teacher will pin the badge on every boy as part of the ceremony -
Yes, we r very impressed by the ceremony.

(which is different from selection test for Galileo).

I have assumed it the same as Euler -- in Euler means auto in math club....the selection test was for Euler plus an interview, and then the boys told to report for math club..... now the math club test is a subsequent matter. -
DS attended all 4 selection tests - Euler, Galileo, Math club and Science club. Some requires interviews. He didn’t give up on Science Club and took science club selection test again in Yr 2.
Not sure about auto getting into Math club if on Euler pull-out program. End of yr 1 need to get certain grade to continue on galileo program. -

your DS is year 2 this year ? and he joins the Galileo program in year 2 ? -
Don’t think there’s intake in year 2, according to DS.

Hi vk2010,
U and I playing hide and seek, hopping between DSA thread and here. -
naggo-nitemare:
Congratulations to the 35 rafflesians who are awarded this year's psc scholarships! There are 72 psc scholarships given out this year. Read http://www.ri.edu.sg/main/raffles news for details.
kaypoh to ask : was your DS at the NUS Math Camp yesterday (13 Aug) ? -
vlim:
Oops so if he joined in term 1 but fail the test in term 3 then he will out liao.. :scared:
Hi, this is naggo-nitemare's DS. I've spotted some inaccuracies and I'd like to point them out.
he can join in term 1, but the test is in term 3verykiasu2010:
Thanks for ypur detail explaination vk2010!
So if the kid is keen in maths club, he can only apply to enrol after term 2?
1. The math club and Euler tests are on the same day, somewhere at the end of term 1. Math club selection relies on only the math club test, which is held first. For Euler, they look at your results for the second test, but apparently they will not even bother to mark your script if you did badly for the first test. This has not been confirmed, however; I suspect it's just a threat in case people do not care about the math club test.
The two tests test different things. The math club one is more math olyimpiad centered, whereas the euler test is based on knowledge (eg. e^pi*i + 1 = 0)
It's harder to get into Euler and there's another stage after the tests (the interview). So, it's possible to get into math club but not Euler. However, if you somehow make it into euler but not math club, then you are granted auto-entry into math club. This was the case of 2 people in year 1 this year.
2. I think the part about the tests being in term 3 was to some extent, misinformation. I can explain. Normally, math club members are expected to get gold for SMO every year. Those who got lower than gold are kicked out by default, according to the teacher-in-charge. However, this year, a lot of math club members did not get gold. Too many to kick out. So these people had to do another test to see who they were going to kick out.
Also, math club accepted two more people who did very well in SMO joined math club a couple of weeks ago.
3. It is true that some competitions are open to all students, however, there are also some competitions which are only meant for math club members, like this year's Australian Mathematics Competition. It was for math club members, euler students and math RA students and compulsory for year 2s. No one else could join.
4. Even though Euler=entry to math club, Galileo =/= entry to science club, according to my Galileo and science club friends.
Tks DS. One last piece of advice. Buy the PE shorts before registration day. Some yr 1 boys experienced shortages of PE shorts for up to at least a month. So for PE lessons they made do with old Pri sch shorts or black alternatives.
Congrats to all with RI COs n WLs! Choose RI!!
