Spoken to DAS, the assessment is early oct. If I remember correctly the charges is $400 b4 GST.

For his study, my sis now does not force him. The prob now is his attitude; he is getting more impatient and aggressive.

May I know how old is yr girl now?

Also, may I ask u few questions as I need yr opinion,

1)\tHe is no good in is his study. We now understand that he got the learning difficulty, should we let transfer him to other less stressful sch?
2)\tHow long has yr girl been attending? Do you see yr girl improvement?
3)\tMy nephew very violent and hot temper. Is this a part of the dyslexia prob?

My girl is 8yrs old.


1) pls talk to the teacher first if this is necessary. maybe they can give him lesser homework or if there is D support group in the school to assist. my girl school has SNO (special needs officer) who is working with her in this area.

2) she started this yr after chinese new yr only. 1hr/wk one-to-one. i should say there is improve but up and down. my girl performance was not bad in P1 but fm p2 onwards i notice her marks dropping and bad habits still exist and getting worse eg untidy writing, disorganise, mirror image wirting, poor attention, poor spelling, … hard time to teach her until i was desperate. even sign her up for MINDCHAMP and then MINDCHAMP suggest me send her for test cos she can’t read and spell appropriatley for her level.

3) Violent and hot temper, yes these are some signs. The D pyschologist (who tested my girl) told me these kids if not proper and timely guided can become "gangster" and gets into fight cos they have so much anger inside them due to stress, shoolwork, parents etc etc. My girl also has attitude problem - impatient, careless, angry when i ask her to do homework, day dream…

Thank you for yr reply. We will talk to the teacher tmr, I only know he’s currently under the learning support group.


What worries us now is his attitude. When it is time for homework, he gets very very angry…… my sis juz read to him, explain to him how to get the answer and he juz need to write the answer. But he will still scream, shout, cry and sometimes push / kick my sis.

The only way to help dyslexics who are severe is through direct intervention. They do not outggrow the condition. And if the condition is severe, it will be hard for them overcome on their own…nor does tuition help. Parents, you need to arm yourself with information… my son is dyslexic and in GEP. So there is hope…get yourself trained in teaching them, it would be more effective than sending them once a week to someone. Good luck!

cctc, violence is not part of the dyslexic problem, although some of them may feel really frustrated by what is expected of them. MAy i suggest that you get a full psychological assessment done by a qualified educational psychologist who will investigate all issues and not just dyslexia. You can then make a more informed choice for your nephew.

I think he need to be assured that he can be clever too. Check out http://www.dyslexiaonline.com/famous/famous.htm and tell him that Thomas Edison was also a dyslexic and he thought he was dumb too!

You could also check out local help at http://www.kidsdyslexia.com.sg/. They had a case study of a RGS gal who was dyslexic but she still did well at the end. The journey may be tougher for them, but only the tough gets going !!! Jia you!

When i first learnt that my ds was dyslexic I sat on the bed and cried the whole night :oops: Luckily many mommies gave me support and after one full year remedial with http://www.kidsdyslexia.com.sg/, ds now tops his class in English tests. Just to share my experience as encouragement. Their fee is comparatively cheaper too. Another thing to note is that any intervention programme should start as young as possible to leverage on a young mind's plasticity. If you are working and cannot find time for intervention programmes, I also heard that there are also many well trained specialist who'd go to your house if you need them.

Hi Getz

How do you first find out that your son is dyslexic? I understand that for a gifted child, they are able to mask their learning disabilities quite well. My question raised due to my concern on my bright boy who I notice keep having the d & b error or simply any letters/numbers written in mirror image. He is able to read a few level ahead but I find him to be cautious.

I thought dyslexic has nothing to do with clever or not. Lee Kuan Yew is also dyslexic. He is super clever.
