Subject Combination in JC

Hey all!


I am intending to take the following subjects when I get to JC, so:

H2 - English Literature, Economics, History, Knowledge and Inquiry
H1 - MTL, PW

Alternatively, if I do not qualify for KI

H2 - E Lit, Econs, History
H1 - Math, GP, MTL, PW

I am just rather concerned that if I choose the first combination - I would wind up not taking a proper 'contrasting subject' (because, KI wouldn't exactly qualify as a subject when taking courses in university). On the other hand, I really am not interested in math.

While many insist that math is really important... is it really that important if I'd probably want to do an arts/ humanities course (Literature, etc.) in university instead of a math/ science one (Mathematics, etc.)?

Also, hypothetically speaking, if one decides to drop KI (due to inability to cope with the demands of the subject) and switch to GP. What does one do with the contrasting subject element that is required?

Hence, is it possible to take H2 KI + H1 Math on top of H2 Lit, Econs, History? Just in case? (I know it probably doesn't exceed the academic units, but will it be a wise choice since it will be taxing? Or is it safer since it offers a contrasting subject to an arts stream student?)

Also, how recognised is KI in universities?

Firstly you have to qualify for KI. Your grades plus diagnostic test will determine if you are suited. If you intend to go overseas to study, KI or GP does not matter. Uni’s overseas are quite slack. Math is important. Take H1. Locally KI will stand in better light than GP (all else being equal).

10 points for H1 A, 20 points for H2 A. For each lower grade, minus 1.25 for H1 and 2.5 for H2. So H1 B is 8.75, H2 B is 17.5.

10 percentile for Law admission is 87.5, meaning you can probably afford at most 1 H2 B or 2 H1 B.

10 percentile for NUS/NTU Acct is 85-87.5, while SMU Accts is slightly lower than that.

Everything is in order except the H2 Econs. Judging from his combine humanities result, likely he will struggle in this subject.

A wiser choice is H2 English Lit to replace econs.

He has not taken Eng Lit for O Level. So taking H2 for Eng Lit will be difficult for him, as he feels. Alternatively, do u think if he takes up H2 for Econs for first year and drop to H1 in JC2. Will this work?


Should he take H1 MT as well?

At jc level, MT is not critical so forget it.


Your ds managed to score an A1 for english so he should be able to cope with H2 EL even without taking it at 0-levels. If he still insist of taking econs, why not attempt it at H1 level instead of H2? Reason being he is not particulary strong in his sciences and he needs to spend alot of time studying and revising these subjects on top of PW and cca… Idea is to ease the pressure for him to perform. Alot of catching up to do inorder to perform well in H2 Maths and chemistry. Must understand that for A-levels, anything below B-grade is considered useless.

Don’t worry about the academic units unless he is aiming for top scholarships.

during one of the JC open house, en econ teacher explained that the number of contact hours for H1 econs is 1/3 of the H2 econs, yet for content quantity, H1 econ is about 2/3 of H2 econs…meaning to say that H1 econ is not worth doing and is difficult to score


if you have the flair and the zeal for econ, take H2, else forget it, look for other humanity subject for H1 which could be more sane than econ
