Subject Combination in JC

My son has intended to select the following subjects for JC. We are wondering if this is a wise choice. Is there anything that my son has missed out for consideration?
H2 – Maths, Physic, Chem and Econs
H1 – GP & PW
His score for his O Level is as follow. His nett score is 7.
A1 – Eng, E Maths, Phy
A2 – Chem, Bio, A Maths
B3 – MT
B4 – Com Hum (SS, Hist)
C5 - HMT
Everything is in order except the H2 Econs. Judging from his combine humanities result, likely he will struggle in this subject.
A wiser choice is H2 English Lit to replace econs. -
He has not taken Eng Lit for O Level. So taking H2 for Eng Lit will be difficult for him, as he feels. Alternatively, do u think if he takes up H2 for Econs for first year and drop to H1 in JC2. Will this work?
Should he take H1 MT as well?
We are rather confused. -
At jc level, MT is not critical so forget it.
Your ds managed to score an A1 for english so he should be able to cope with H2 EL even without taking it at 0-levels. If he still insist of taking econs, why not attempt it at H1 level instead of H2? Reason being he is not particulary strong in his sciences and he needs to spend alot of time studying and revising these subjects on top of PW and cca… Idea is to ease the pressure for him to perform. Alot of catching up to do inorder to perform well in H2 Maths and chemistry. Must understand that for A-levels, anything below B-grade is considered useless.
Don’t worry about the academic units unless he is aiming for top scholarships. -
during one of the JC open house, en econ teacher explained that the number of contact hours for H1 econs is 1/3 of the H2 econs, yet for content quantity, H1 econ is about 2/3 of H2 econs…meaning to say that H1 econ is not worth doing and is difficult to score
if you have the flair and the zeal for econ, take H2, else forget it, look for other humanity subject for H1 which could be more sane than econ

Hey! that’s exactly my subject combination! Haha, remember it is very content heavy! and if you’re not prepared to be killed by the amount of content that history offers, i suggest you swopping it with h2 maths.
unless you have never taken amaths before. But nothing a good maths tutor cant fix. depends on what JC you are posted to too. Some schools are better at some subjects, some schools are better at others -
Hmmm English Lit H2 is far less taxing compared to Econs. It may be difficult at the beginning, but if he is strong in his english language, should be no problem
Heard that many teachers prefer students not to have a background in lit before taking h2 lit -
Hmmm maths is important, it’s a pre-requisite for most courses in uni. For example, if you want to take econs in uni, they do not require you to have taken econs at all. however, they do require you to have taken at least h1 maths

Agree with verykiasu2010’s thoughts on the JC Econs teacher’s comments. For whatever reason, the amount of content to cover for H1 Econs is not too different from that of H2 Econs (it’s basically one chapter from J1). So in a sense, H1 Econs is not necessarily easier, although the A level questions tend to be ever so slightly more straightforward for the H1 paper.
It’s a little hard to tell if a student will have a "flair" for Econs. In some ways, there isn’t that much overlap with History and SS because there’s less memorization, no questioning of sources, and more emphasis on application of theory and models rather than knowing facts. I would compare it to writing a variety of science lab reports, including data interpretation.
As for Lit, there are indeed students who take A level Lit without O level Lit. Strength in English language doesn’t necessarily mean strength in Lit, though. It is possible to study for the prepared texts but digesting and writing meaningfully about the unseen poems is tough. -
To me, Econs is less similar to human subject at sec level, but more similar to a Eng+Sci subject, as Logical/analytical/language skills are far more important than memorising for Econ.

Comparing H1 econs vs H2 econs is a rather ‘weird’ comparison. The important pt is not about the extend of the syllabus but rather the competition within the cohort. The general level of understanding is totally different.
Hence, it’s easier for an average student to do well at H1 level whereas at H2 , u are facing the best of the cohort.
