Subject Combination in JC
-
tkbd:
tkbd, thank you for your responseYour combination for H2 subjects seem perfectly fine and logical. However word of advise: You have to work doubly hard for H2 Maths because you didn't do exceptionally well for your double Maths in O Level. You need to train up your A Math foundation so start early.
As for your H1 subject, choose a subject which you're interested in. Because studying for something which you don't like would really be a torture in the JC system. Since you're in doubt, talk to one of the Visual Arts teacher in your JC and seek their advice.
I will, because I know Math was never (and will probably never be) my strong point. (In fact, I got F9 in my Prelim 2 for Amath...)
Okay, I think I'll speak to a teacher tomorrow.
thank you!! -
Quill:
Oh, haha. Then why don't you take H2 Biology since you said you're interested in Bio (afterall you got the same grade for Bio and A Math)? And then take H1 Art?

Is it because the course you're interested in requires H2 Math as a pre-requisite? Or the subject combinations are fixed in your JC? -
^ Unfortunately, it's fixed.

And I do like Bio, but not enough to take H2 Bio ^^
Plus, I just checked the requirements for the university courses that I'm interested in and the courses that actually do make use of H2 Bio don't interest me at all, and practically no courses make use of H1 Bio at all. So, according to your advice earlier, this has really tipped the scale in favour of H1 Arts.
I don't like Math, but the thing about Math is that it's possible to excel in Math through sheer hard work. I may have screwed up in O levels but I'll definitely work harder this time.
Sorry...looks like I went off on a tangent lol. -

Icic. Yep what you said's very true. Math is all about practicing and practicing. No easy way out.^ Unfortunately, it's fixed.

Thank you, and to you too, in whichever stage of education/life you're in now! -
First I wonder - what does he like ?
If he did well in physics and math and wants to go on in science at University, then good written and oral language skills are very important. In science education once he gets out of school the things that will make him successfull are 1. really understanding what he is doing (vs taking courses just for maximum chances at Aās) and #2. being able to communicate well both verbally and in writing. -
Hi, Iām a JC 1 student posted to ACJC. My score is 9 minus 4 = 5.
Im currently thinking hard about my subject combination. Iām intending to take ELL(English Language and Linguistics), which is, by itself, offered as a H2 subject. Im a science stream student and wish to have the following combi:
H2 bio, chem, math and ELL.
I wish to take 4 H2s, but ACJC has a requirement of a student to attain 8 and below for L1R5 before he/she qualifies for 4 H2s.
Iām intending to appeal for 4H2s, but really unsure if its right for me. I understand the workload is much more than H1. But isit advisable to take 4H2s? My olevel results are:
Eng- A2
MT-A1
HMT-A1
Chem-A1
Bio-A2
Phy-A2
Comb Hum.-A2
Amath-A2
Emath-A1
Im thinking of another combi as well, if i cant get in ELL.
As follows:
H2 bio, chem, math, H1econs.
Would you able to compare and advise which combi is more suitable?
And would you please kindly clear this doubt of mine:
If a student takes 4 H2s, i understand that in uni score calculation, the worst h2 will be converted to a h1 subj. However, if all 4 H2s scored As, which is the worst H2? Are there things like high As or low As? This is really bugging me. -

I would advise u to take up 3H2 + 1H1 instead of 4H2. Hence, your combi should be biology, chem and maths at H2 and econs at H1. By jc cohort standard you are average and there's no point to take additional workload.
If you do well during your promos, you can always apply to take up a H3 module which ranks you comparatively with students offering 4H2. There are several stats boards which accept 10 aus for scholarship applications. For UAS, the unis compute your 3H2 + 1H1 + PW + GP total max 90 pts. For 4 H2 students, their weakest H2 is regarded as H1 whereas those top students that managed to score straights As for 4H2, their score shall be computed as 3H2 + 1H1. No difference. Can't diffferentiate btw a high A or a low A same as 0-levels.
I also notice that you scored very well for your HMT. If it is chinese, you may wish to substitute your H1 econs with H1 chinese studies. -
Hi thanks a lot for the reply! I would like to ask, could you tell me why i should go for H1 chinese studies? How does this subject help in university admission? Like what courses can i get into?

Hi, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that uni admissions courses are mostly focused on your 3H2+1H1 or 4H2 grades, instead of your choice of subject. Perhaps the choice (relevance) of your subject to the course will determine your admission in borderline cases, but as far as I know the grades you get are much more impt a factor.
For me as a fellow student, my choice would depend on 1) how confident you are of doing well in the subject 2) interest in the subject 3) how relevant the subject is to your future uni course. These factors have different weightage for different people
