2009 GEP Screening And Selection

glchua:
Totally agree what you say, glchua. Seriously, who cares when you're trying to get a job in your 30s whether you went to some gifted program when you were 9?Chief,
No need to cry!
In a sense, the GEPers do represent the top 1%: the top 1% for the GEP selection test.
Of course, the validity of the test is debatable, even the program itself is debatable.
The future performance, achievements etc from these kids are questionable too. Some of these students, even as early as in secondary schools, start to fail exams. You would be surprised, some even fail mathematics, the very core of the GEP test.
So there is no need to feel sorry for those who didn't even go through the 1st round.
I take it as one measure of my son's mind at the time of test. That is it. Just like the results from tests and exams. That is also why I don't allow my kids to do past year papers or extra assessments to prepare for exams. I want to see the real result.
Just like height, weight, blood pressure etc. Non of the data would point out the health of a person. Just a general consensus of what kind of data constitutes good health. And even for a fundamental thing like health, investigators are constantly changing their views.
So does getting into GEP means \"bright\"? Does getting good PSLE grades means \"bright\"? Results are just crude measures of intelligence. Even the definition of \"intelligence\" is changing.
The link between \"success\" and \"intelligent\" is also questionable. Look around you and you would hardly see people holding high positions being very smart. Average intelligence is sufficient, hardwork is needed, but \"success\" always requires topping up with huge doses of EQ, luck and connection.
BTW, \"success\" above is the typical narrow definition that the majority agrees on.
And Chief, nolah, gifted just means quirky with a different way of seeing things. Trouble is, as parents, we glorify the status because the gahmen gives out so much goodies, so who don't want the child to get in? I know the argument of lower cut off point (200) for PSLE because they're not given much time to prepare, but why arrange it like that in the first place?
Good luck to all who don't know yet and congrats to those who're in. To those who didn't get in, it's a small part of your life - there is much more to look forward to in your life journey. Good job, all!! -

So quiet in this thread now? Has all the parents gone off to pick their child in search for the yellow envelope...

my dd didnt receive any letter from sch today... another 22 hours to go................ it's goin to be sleepless night tonight

-
My DS got into GEP last year. All the selected students went onto the stage to receive the yellow envelope from the Principal during assembly. When asked what did the Principal say to him, he said: \"Pass this envelope to your parents.\".
And the sleepless nights began. We had heard many pros and cons from other parents.
It was a short time to make decision. Something like we were notified on Tuesday, went for the talk by MOE on Thursday and the following Monday was the deadline. To go for GEP or not to? STRESS ah!
