Collected my new iPad but without protective cover and stylus.

Can get from the vendor at special price or need to buy from outside?

I thought the price we paid included everything.
Also, the price of new iPad is cheaper than iPad2 (?) and are we getting any refund or any extra goodies in return?

Also, the price of new iPad is cheaper than iPad2 (?) and are we getting any refund or any extra goodies in return?
Hi Belle2011, principal mentioned in last saturday's talk that if price (not sure new ipad price or ipad 2 price) is cheaper than what you paid, you will get refund. If price is more expensive, school will absorb the cost. (please don't hold me responsible if I misinterpreted 😄 ).

Principal reiterated that ipad is NOT compulsory. I will try to convey what he said:
iPad is meant to be a learning tool (from student's perspective). In class, teacher will use ipad as a teaching tool, ALL students will benefit from teacher's usage of ipad to demonstrate difficult concepts. For those who opt to buy ipad, then they will have the opportunity it at home for revision. For those who opt not to buy, then the revision part will be missing, tho still can revise through other means, maybe effectiveness is different, thats all.

He stressed that neither he himself nor school benefit 一份或一毫 from this ipad exercise, he said he does not need to gain such benefits, his bonus is already more than enough.

During the talk, he mentioned that he is about to retire in 2 years' time, so there is no need for him to do stuff to increase his promotion chances or increase KPI (?) (something like that).

He also mentioned about having similar curriculum from Y1 through to Y3, I do not quite understand this part, does it mean Y2 students going Y3 next year need not choose their subject combinations.

In view of the previous furore and bad press over the ipad issue, I am careful what I write above, trying not to misinterpret what I heard.

In any case, please do not quote me, and if other parents feel that I have misunderstood certain parts of his speech, please correct me.
Hi,

May I know whether RVHS requires all students to take higher Chinese? Do they allow students to take normal Chinese if they find they cannot cope?

For that matter, do SAP schools allow students a choice to take higher Chinese or normal Chinese. I have read through several threads and cannot get definite answers.

Perhaps, parents of students in RVHS or other SAP schools can advise? Thanks.

Yes. All students in RV must take a subject called Higher Chinese and Chinese Culture. They also need a score of B4 and above in order to be promoted to the next level.

What happens if the student scores below B4?
During principal talk, a parent asked what if her child gets F9 for English. Does it mean child has to repeat one year? Principal said: promotion criteria is GPA 2, English and Chinese both B4 minimum and LCD grade Very Good or Excellent.
If the child clears all above but F9 for English, he will not get full promotion status. He will just be \"conditionally promoted\" to Year 2. However, if the child still continue to get F9 in Y2, then will have to repeat. (same for HCL)

The example given was that if a student got F9. (If child got C, personally I think a bit too harsh to repeat a child, maybe case by case basis?)

Principal said actually B4 is not an ideal grade even. B4 standard would be his standard, which is no good. Ideal would be at least A2, but he was bombarded some time back when he tried to implement the A2 = pass criteria, so the yardstick is now set at B4.

Thanks Pepper Spice for the info.

Seems like it is a pretty tough school to go to, especially if Chinese is not at a high level of proficiency.

By the way, what does LCD stands for?

If Chinese is not your child's forte, it may be better to go to another school. RV is an SAP school and hence the emphasis on HCL and Chinese Culture. All RV students read HCL irregardless of whether they have taken HCL in primary school. However, if your child is up to the challenge and wants to take the opportunity to brush the chinese language proficiency and appreciation for chinese culture, then RV is a very good school to go to.

Personally, I believe a strong chinese language proficiency and understanding of chinese values and culture is very important for the younger generation. China's economy is booming and is going to continue booming for years to come. There are lots of opportunities awaiting our kids when they come into the work force.

                    LCD = Leadership & Character Development 😄

the package price is inclusive of both protective cover and stylus. my child's FT has mentioned the casing for the new ipad is different from ipad 2. so the vendor is sourcing for suitable casing for the new ipad and deliver together with the stylus at a later date.

                      so no worries 😄

                        Hi rosecy,

I totally agree with you. Although my kid is taking higher Chinese currently, he does hardly anything outside curriculum time.

We put him in higher Chinese because we want to challenge him a little and hopefully, be sufficiently proficient in the language. But if he struggles in secondary school, this may affect his morale and may also be detrimental to his our studies if he spends too much time to do catch-up.

Really have to make a judgement and see what is best for him.

By the way, anyone knows any SAP schools that offer both higher and normal Chinese?
