MPM Maths - Discussion

Dear all,


Hubby and I visited a Jelic centre last weekend to find out more about Jelic. Though we like what we heard, we are concerned if it is too much for our 3 yo. Can any if you share your views and your experiences with your own child/children? Do your kids have problem sitting through the 1h 15 mins session doing the activities on their own? As she is not required to sit for such a long stretch in her current enrichment and childcare, we are afraid that she may develop a negative attitude towards the programme.

It depends what is your expectations from your child lor. There is nothing wrong with the programme at all. Some 3 yrs old kids with good discipline are able to sit 1hr15mins and with full concentration. wow very amazing kids.

I have just visited MPM (Kovan) and have some questions I hope someone here can help me with.

I told the person I spoke that my gal is 5 and she somehow keep pushing me towards Jelic course. I asked to see the books for MPM and was given the K1 books. After running through, I told her my gal should be able to handle this instead of Jelic but she said MPM is alot of written work while Jelic is more like play study and she learns more than MPM.

My gal is with CMA now. So shd I go ahead with Jelic or insist on MPM?!

Definately goes for MPM! I believe ur purpose of sending ur gal to Maths enrichment is to cultivate interest & same time prepare her for P1.

Jelic mre for younger kids eg:3-4YO…

Mpm k1 work still not do muc wording as compare to K2s…
Personally find nothing wrong wif early exposure.

Personally I would opt for MPM. I also started my boy with MPM at around your gal's age now. So long as a child can recognise numbers 1-10, he or she is ready to start. Maybe the trainer is just trying to be more cautious with taking in preschoolers as it entails discipline to sit through the completion of the books, plus homework.

The good thing about starting at this age is that the programme would give the child a good head start without the pressure. The materials are colourful, and there are manipulative tools as aids. My boy enjoyed and benefitted from this programme alot.

My son started Jelic when we was 5yo. He went on to MPM one year later. Initially i was like you hesitant to let him join Jelic but due to the teacher persistance, I agreed. I glad i follow that and did not regret at all. Here’s the reason why…

1. Jelic is similar to mpm. It teaches math concept, logical reasoning, references etc
2. Difference…Jelic uses total manipulatives and no writing required, thus its more fun
3. The concept they learn in Jelic is definitely useful and helpful when they into MPM later
4. After Jelic and they ready for MPM, they will be given pre-assessment to determine their starting pt in MPM. My son surprised me as he not required to start frm d 1st book. He even has no problem in completing his mpm work either in centre or at home.
5. My son is now in P1. I never ever give him assessment book or prepare him for his mid year exam. On weekends he will only do his MPM homework
6.He maybe careless with his counting but he understands the concepts very well thus has no difficulty in doing problem sum.

I understand how eager we want our kids to advance. But learning it thru the fun way like Jelic is the best way. Moreover MPM has lots of writing which they will do it for years. We shoulnt bore them, should we?
I’m now a proud and relaxed mom. My son enjoys Math so much and scored 96 for his math mid year with very little guidance from us.

I just enrolled my girl in MPM. I noticed that they have a few different trainers. May I ask how to out if the trainers are certified? I want to make sure they are not just any part timers trying to fill in when the actual trainers are not available. Any adv is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi my girl is currently with sakamoto since Apr this yr. She is now P1. However she still hv difficulty in problem solving. I am not sure whether I should switch her to MPM ( nearest buangkok MRT).


Understand fr sakamoto thru this forum that sakamoto will not start their method teaching when the child is in lower Pri. Currently they combined Eng and Math in P1 lesson. Sometime her teacher will juz do Eng when she does not hv sufficient time to do Math. They are not fully doing math in 2 hrs duration.

Can anyone pls advice? TIA!
