So in RI all students need to sign up a core and a merit CCA is it? Is merit CCA applicable to everyone? Till now still very blur...

core CCA is compulsory. minimum must have one
merit CCA is optional, can do without
some are having merit CCA by default for eg math olympiad team members are auto incl as math club members, and math club is merit cca

Why differentiate between core and merit? :?
may be those merit CCA are more related to academic, so not really a CCA

math club, science club, chinese cultural club etc as examples are like extension from acad studies....merit cca

while all the sports group, uniform group, musical groups, and lastly debating club....are core CCA....look closely....they are not much related to acad studies

      just my personal observation

There isn't such a thing as 'math Olympiad team members'. Based on an annual entry test, math club members are selected. Some get in later if they perform well in the SMO Jr or if they are selected for the Euler math program. Then based on their Math Olympiad proficiencies, these math club members split into groups for Friday training classes. A handful deemed to be v proficient are given more intensive training to also cover the Open category.

Come SMO rounds, all participants compete as equals, no one is so-called an olympiad team member. When results are released on 1sept, the top 3 of the school will get to receive the Team Award in addition to their individual awards.

Some jrs who perform v well in the Open category, will join SIMO training at NUS on national team level. A couple who are really really outstanding get to convert their math club merit CCA into Core CCA status, ie, they can leave the other earlier core to train in math 3 times a week.

okay there is no \"math olympiad team members\"....just trying to say those who take part in math olympiad competition .... and they do represent RI and their scores count towards the team award

congrats your son did very well. year 3 or year 4?

How about merit CCA like chess club and photography club which are not related to study?

So, merit CCA can be converted to core CCA. Who is the one who can decide?

RI PTM is tomorrow. Just curious, do you still go for the PTM now that our boys are in the secondary school?

I’m going tomorrow because there is a talk concerning the yr 2s, maybe on yr3 subject choices, RA etc. I thought I’d better be well informed of what’s being offered for senior year.

PTM slots were mostly filled up by the time I logged in. Sigh.
