Hi all, I just got my ds into cvps. Notice this thread for cvps is quiet. How about spicing it up by sharing info about the school? Any parents can share? How r the school curriculum, teaching staff? I understand cvps will have single session next year. School expected to start 7.45am but they have yet to decide what time to end classes. Heard noth vista have classes till 3.30pm!

The new Principal, Mr Chua, took over in 2010. So far, I found the teaching staff to be very warm. There have been parent workshops for maths/modelling and hanyu pinyin. Also, in every term, there will be parent-child talks conducted by 3rd-party groups on Saturdays.

There are ~30 students per class. For my girl’s class, there are 2 monitors, 2 English group leaders and 2 Maths group leaders. They are divided up and allocated to different classes for Mother Tongue.

For English, there are no textbooks as they follow the Stellar program. The kids will be given worksheets in class and they can bring home to do as homework. However, I noticed one thing. The school doesn’t have supplementary books for English like other schools. I have trolled the Popular textbook ordering website and the branded schools will require their students to purchase books like Word Bank, Grammar, readers etc. I have since bought 1 or 2 of these books for extra revision with my girl. Her FT said that she is well-prepared so I’m not that worried for her English and Maths. She was assigned to sit with a weaker student but he seems to get on her nerves with his incorrect answers, lol. I told her to learn to live with others. So far, she has made friends with students in each of the P1 classes. So I’m not that worried about her.

The students will be streamed to Higher Chinese (1 class) in Term 3 based on Term 2 results. For Chinese, my girl was streamed into an average class. We are ok with that since we don’t speak Chinese at home. They started the year with hanyu pinyin and almost all of the students were able to score full marks for the 1st test. I sent her for Saturday classes at Beijing Language in SKCC for more exposure to the language.

Before my girl started the school year, my neighbours often said that CVPS gives a lot of homework to the students and remedial lessons for the weaker students. So far, I don’t see her bringing back a lot of homework as she will usually complete them in school.

There are also online learning portals like MConline and Xuele. The teachers will give out extra assignments via the MConline portal. So it is required to have a PC at home.

The amount of work load is only visible when the child is in P5 onwards.

Not only this school. In fact all schools give their student a lot a lot of remedials, HW, etc for the P5 and P6.

Neighbour’s kid is in P2. The phrase ‘a lot’ is rather subjective.

Thanks Coralie. That is very informative. My son is weak in english language so I will probably go and get supp books for him. Hope that workload is not heavy in lower primary as I still want my son to enjoy his childhood. So early already start learning Hanyu Pinyin! I must be still living in dinosaur age, thinking that they learn HYPY only in upper Primary hahaa
