You may look at tweets. They have shown how many get distinctions.

I don't follow tweets. Can please advise the
      L1R5 for 2015 cohort?

I don't recall seeing anything on the L1R5 scores for the 2015 cohort. What they mentioned is the names of those scoring 9 distinctions right down to number of students with 6 distinctions. Based on my rough calculations, about 40% of the 4E cohort scored 6 distinctions and above.

Pls lets keep to the discussion , no matter how ridiculous the opinions seem.

Lee_yi comes across as a wonderful person and has a beautiful family with 2 kids. So please .
Stooping to personal attacks, Humiliating families is just not done. I realise this is a retaliation but an eye for an eye leaves the world blind.

Internet discussions rarely change minds - sadly. People rarely are here not to see the other perspective but to impose their own. So yes , it goes on and on ... nothing surprising.

      so why get personal?
Well said. Everyone have their own opinions and let's just keep to the discussion as what Sun_2010 has suggested. No need to get personal. Chill it everyone!

      JayneFong_:
      Hi everyone,

my daughter scored 8 raw 6 nett (2 bonus points from her CCA).

      English A1
      Chinese A1
      Full Humanities (Literature) A1
Combined Humanities (History and SS) A1
      E math A2
      A math A2
      Chemistry A2

Considering ACJC and VJC for their Humanities scholarship programme that my daughter is interested in...
Torn between both as I have heard that VJC's school culture is good and students are polite, kind, hardworking...but distance-wise is not that near as ACJC. Direct bus (24 stops) to VJC... Heard that ACJC's HP isn't as good and they have a 'party' culture. But we stay relatively near ACJC...

      Any advice is greatly appreciated...
Looking at your DD's grades, it leaves me wondering if I should push my DS to take Higher Chinese as it merely takes a 'Pass' to get an additional 2 bonus points (besides the 2 for CCA). I reckon it makes a lot of difference in terms of available choice of JCs when nett L1R5 is 4 instead of 6... In any case, congrats to your DD for scoring 7 Distinctions!

On hindsight, I think we relied too much on past data and information to make decisions which led to disappointment and unhappiness.
Hmm... while agreeing with the points you've made, I find your above statement strange... haven't we always been relying on past data/info to make decisions... (pending any new data/info that supersede them) henceforth the use of references and precedents?

Being sensitive and having a sense of empathy are what differentiate humans from animals. There is no need to rub salt into the wound with unnecessary comments.

On the contrary, it is necessary to identify who, if any, are actually affected by the \"poor communication\".

Misplaced sensitivity and empathy merely encourages a victim culture.

In order to rub salt into a wound, there must first be a wound. Where is the wound again?

It seems there is still this thinking that the poorly timed change in appeal 'rules' without clear upfront communication by MOE have no bearings to parents and students appealing... Perhaps let me share my views further.

Without clear indication or certainty on the new 'ruling'... parents and students with t-scores that did not meet the schools' COPs would still be appealing this year... despite all the hearsay... since MOE did not officially say so and schools had always been accepting students with t-scores below their COP subject to vacancies and grounds of appeal in the past years. Note that not all schools allow/accept online/electronic appeals and some require parents/students to submit them in person at the school. This means parents have to take leave and time to bring their children to the schools to submit the appeal. Even for those who submit online, time is needed to prepare the appeal and make copies of all the relevant supporting documents. ALL this could be avoided if MOE says NO clearly and early so that parents and students need not go through all these resulting in time and efforts wasted, not to mention headaches and disappointment.

I must highlight that not all parents/students who appealed are trying to game the system and/or exercised their 6 choices lightly. The schools they appealed to are likely to be their first choice while sensible choices could still be made for the remaining choices. The effort to appeal to their choice schools could be due to various reasons such as CCA offered, distance to school, school's learning environment and culture etc... no different to any parents/students out there that do not or need not appeal. Yes, we respect the posting system and the fairness in terms of the change (i.e. by merit) but the appeal process is not worse off than the affiliation process where students with far lower t-scores are admitted. Despite that, the change could be accepted readily but make it known upfront like what they have done for appeal to polytechnics which I had shared in an earlier post. This would have prevented most parents and students from wasting their efforts and time, except those really hardcore ones who die die would try but that it a different story and the choice is theirs.

If those who insists in defending the stand that MOE is right in the way their implement/communicate the change in this instance and cannot do better, and the parents/students who appealed deserved to be inconvenienced and have their time/efforts wasted... for following a process/system carried over from previous years, not knowing rules have changed that effectively nullified their efforts... and should just accept their fate/luck... I will rest my case...

Both sides have their fair share of views and comments and there is no absolute right or wrong here. Try to see from each others' viewpoints and we can have a more fruitful discussions. Enough have been said on this issue and we are already in the second week of school. The dust would have been settled and may all those who did not get into your first choice of school move on and work hard for the O Level! Your choice JC/Poly waits šŸ™‚

Yes, agree with you except that we have only one MOE that rules all and we are just asking them to tell us things upfront since the option to walk away is not there. Anyway, glad that they are doing so now for the JC Admission Exercise by saying so upfront right after release of O Level results :rahrah: At least it shows they listen unlike some... :stupid:

      Actually, they didn't.

It still remains an internal comms to school. Except that this time round, parents and reporters have gone around asking schools/MOE for confirmation.

Not quite the same as saying it upfront. And if I may argue, I reckon that the timeline that they sent to secondary schools prior to S1 posting and the timeline used for the comms to JC prior to JAE is the same.

Seems that you are right about this. It is still not made known in the 'official' resource/documents published on the MOE's website. Interestingly, I saw something MOE posted last year after the posting results are out pertaining to appeal to poly... Thought it is so much more upfront and transparent and wondering why the same cannot be applied for appeal to JCs :stupid:

      Appeals

\"Those who wish to appeal for a place in a polytechnic diploma course or seek a transfer to another diploma course can do so via the Centralised Joint Polytechnic JAE appeal system at http://www.polytechnic.edu.sg/jaeappeal, from Friday, 30 January 2015, 9:00 am to Tuesday, 3 February 2015, 4:00pm. Every applicant submitting an appeal is allowed to select up to three polytechnic diploma courses for which they meet the minimum entry requirements (i.e. those listed in Form A), and attains an aggregate score that matches or is better than that of the lowest-ranked student successfully posted through the 2015 JAE1. The outcome of the JAE appeals will be released through the Centralised Joint Polytechnic JAE appeal website on Monday, 9 February 2015, at 2:00 pm. For more information on the appeals exercise, please refer to the Centralised Joint Polytechnic JAE appeal website.\"

If you cannot afford Ippudo cos it is too expensive, stick to Tampopo then.

If you still want to push your luck but only to be informed by Ippudo suddenly they dont accept walk ins anymore, then respect their policy, move on & go eat at Ajisen or Ramen Play, if you hv forsaken your queue number at Tampopo earlier.

If you believe in working hard, you will one day get to Japan to eat at the original Ippudo.

The main question that should be asked is whether MOE can improve their public communications. I am not alone in thinking that the \"no appeal if score is below school COP\" directive could be better communicated as these various posts could attest.

One can further fault MOE for not sufficiently politically sensitive, their poor communications resulted in the \"no appeal\" directive being the lightning rod for disappointed parents' frustrations whereas had they effectively communicated this directive, disappointed parents would have no excuse to blame MOE.

I may be mistake but MOE appears to have learnt something from the unhappy secondary school selection episode and for the JC selection process, the\"no appeal\" directive was communicated clearly prior the start of the selection.

Last but least, should parents be the last to know? Does this not lay bare the maxims that parents need to be engaged and that education is a collaborative effort between educators and parents? Or are we still living in an era of \"MOE/Government knows best\"?
I now appreciate organization with good PR strategy/skill to communicate clearly to customers regardless it is good or bad news... and most importantly with empathy! It is indeed a rare skill to possess judging from some comments we see here. Of course, saying something 'right' but in the process rubbing salt on someone's wound may be correct in principle but says much about one's communication/PR skill. Of course I know some will explain they are the 'straight' kind of person who express what they think/how they feel without much thought. But such 'thoughtlessness' or tactless words should be best kept to oneself... instead of saying them to upset/hurt others. There are better time/ways to debate on such 'principles'.

Yes, it is indeed heartening and assuring to see MOE communicating the rule/directive that appeals from students who does not meet the school's COP will not be accepted upfront this time so that ALL students are clear about it before deciding on their choice of JC. It is something so simple to implement and it is hard for anyone to challenge the 'fairness' of this change. I hope MOE's communication in future can be kept this simple and transparent. This is all we are asking for.

For all parents whose DS/DD did not made it to their top choices, let's move on and encourage your DS/DD to make the best use of their stay in the posted schools. It's really up to them to work hard and prove themselves. I recalled someone quoted a previous top PSLE student who said that if you are a piece of gold, you will shine wherever you are... I cannot agree more.

It may be fair, gutsy or whatever. The issue is not about the \"What\" (i.e. new directive). It is about the \"How\". MOE has every right to implement whatever directive it wishes. It does not need to listen to anyone's opinion. But be responsible enough to publicly announce it early.
Very fair statement indeed but there are just some that cannot or refuse to see and understand this point... sigh... :stupid: Anyway, it's water under the bridge and for better or worse, they are now history. Let's hope MOE will do better when communicating any change in policies/guidelines etc. in future :xedfingers: :salute:
