Hi parents and guardians, I have compiled most of the Q&A - PSLE & P5 Science based on the 2008 syllabus posted on this website and would like to share with all who are interested. If you wish to receive them just send an email to alfretztay@yahoo.com.sg. It is free-of charge!

Note : I would like to place on record here to thank all who have contributed in one way of another here, particularly kiasuparents of course in making this possible. All the best!

I have received some private messages but are unable to read them. Please send an email to alfretztay@yahoo.com.sg instead if you wish to receive them.

Hi Alfred, are you able to receive my email?
Hi deardear07, I apologise for the late reply as I believe that I had not receive a prompting link from kiasuparents with regards to your post. I have also not visited this thread for a year or so as I have been concentrating on answering questions posted on P5 and 6 Math. Have you receive the attachments for Q&A - PSLE & P5 Science based on the 2008 syllabus posted on this website?

Hi pls help. This question is from eph preparing for psle maths.

A pie chart shows how a sum of money was shared among four men. (Sorry have problem posting the pie chart).
Max 25% of pie chart
John 30% of pie chart
Bobby unknown %
Ivan unknown %

Ivan's share was 70% more than Bobby's share. If the sum of money was $21600, how much money did Ivan get?

Thanks
100 - 25 - 30 = 45

45% x 21600 = 9720

270% ------- 9720

1% ------- 9720/270 = 36

170%------- 170 x 36 = 6120

For easier understanding :

Max ------- 25% x 21600 = 5400

John ------- 30% x 21600 = 6480

21600 - 6480 - 5400 = 9720

Bobby ------- 100%

Ivan ------- 170%

270% ------- 9720

1% ------- 9720/270 = 36

170%------- 170 x 36 = 6120

Ans : $6120.

In a class there are 25% as many boys as girls. How many more girls than boys are there? Express your answer as a percentage.

BigDevil:
200%?
boys : girls
25% : 100%
1u : 4u
4u - 1u = 3u
(3u/1u) x 100% = 300%

Ans : 300%.

Hi, need help fir these 2 sum

A baker baked some cakes.30% of the cakes were chocolate cakes and the rest were pandan cakes. After selling 88 pandan cakes and 5/6 of the chocolate cakes, he has 1/5 of the original number of cakes left.
A)what fraction of the pandan cakes were sold?
B) how many chocolate cakes did he sell?

Since it's a percentage, we let the total cakes in the beginning be 100u. That means 30u for chocolate and 70u for Pandan.

There's two way to refer to the left over.

1st way is 1/5 of the original number.
Leftover = 1/5 X100u = 20u

2nd way to reference to leftover is after he sold 88 pandan and 5/6 chocolate
Leftover = (70u - 88) + 1/6(30u)
= (70u - 88) + 5u
= 75u -88

The leftover are equal,
20u = 75u - 88
55u = 88
u = 1.6

Total cakes in the beginning = 100u = 160 cakes
A) Fraction of pandan cakes sold = 88/160 = 11/20 ##

B) He sold 5/6 of 30u of choc. which is 25u
Choc cakes sold = 25u = 40 ###

I would solve the above problem as follows :
(a)
Total ——- 100u
chocolate : 30u (before)
(5/6) x 30u = 25u
30u – 25u = 5u (after)
100u – 30u = 70u
pandan : 70u (before)
70u – 88 (after)
5u + 70u – 88 = 75u – 88
(75u – 88) x 5 = 375u – 440 ——- 100u
1u ——- 440/(275) = 1.6
70u ——- 1.6 x 70 = 112
88/112 = 11/14

(b)
25u ——- 25 x 1.6 = 40

Ans : (a) 11/14; (b) 40 chocolates cakes.

Ivan cycled from the school to the library at 80m/min. His sister cycled from the library to the school at 65m/min. Both of them started cycling towards each other at the same time and did not change their speeds throughout the journey. When Ivan reached the library, his sister was 480m from the school. What was the distance between the school and the library?
80 - 65 = 15 (difference in speed)
480/15 = 32 (time taken by Ivan)
32 x 80 = 2560 (distance covered by Ivan)

Ans : 2560m

Daddy 😧
Ender:
Zann bought 600g of chicken and 1.4kg of mutton. Wayne bought 1.4kg of chicken and 600g of mutton. Zann paid $8.80 more than Wayne. 100g of chicken cost $1.25.

A) How much does 100g of mutton cost?
B) How much money did Zann spend?
TIA!

Zann spent $7.5 + 1.4M
Wayne spent $17.5 + 0.6M

$7.5 + 1.4M - $17.5 - 0.6M = 8.8
-$10 + 0.8M = $8.8
0.8M = $18.8
M = $23.5 /kg , Note I have been working with KG, 1.4 and 0.6 are in kg.

a) In 100g = 23.5/10 = $2.35 /100g
b) Zann spent $7.5 + 1.4(23.5) = $40.40

The algebra method doesn't seem to be applicable.
Any other method?

*edit: Orh, they did the modeling method.
Take away the common 600g chicken and 600g mutton.
Then do the difference.
Alternatively,
(a)
600g of chicken + 1.4kg of mutton ------- 1.4kg of chicken + 600g of mutton +$ 8.80
800g of mutton ------- 800g of chicken + $8.80 = 8 x $1.25 + $8.80 = $18.80
100g of mutton ------- $18.80/8 = $2.35
(b)
$7.50 + 1.4kg of mutton ------- $7.50 + 14 x $2.35 = $40.40

Ans : (a) $2.35; (b) $40.40

Fly2high:
Hi pls help on the below

There are 8 more adults in swimming class A than swimming class B . If 8 men leave swimming class A, 1/3 of the adults
In swimming class A will be men . If 10 women leave swimming class B , the ratio of men to women in swimming class B
Will become 2:3 . Given that the ratio of the total number of men to women in both swimming
Classes is 3:5, how many adults are there in swimming class A ?

Thanks very much !
Fly2high
I would solve the above question as follows :
For class A,
men : women
1u + 8 : 2u

For class B,
men : women
2p : 3p + 10

1u + 8 + 2u – (2p + 3p + 10) = 8
3u ——- 5p + 10

[(1u + šŸ˜Ž + 2p] x 5 = [2u + (3p + 10)] x 3
5u + 40 + 10p = 6u + 9p + 30
1u ——- 10 + 1p

3(10 + 1p) ——- 5p + 10
2p ——- 20
1p ——- 20/2 = 10
1u ——- 10 + 10 = 20
1u + 8 + 2u ——- 3 x 20 + 8 = 68

Ans : 68 adults.
