      gladtobemom:

How many students get into RI at JC level each year, who are not already in the IP at RI or RGS? In other words, what are the chances for 'outsiders' to get into RJC?

RGS takes in 450 at Sec 1, so does RI, that makes 900 going to JC1, assuming no drop out. The number of graduates from JC 2 is about 1200

Hence the net addition is 300, but the actual could be lesser as some are scholars from Malaysia or China etc who are admitted between S1 to S4 outside the 900

Just to add on. RGS takes in another about 50 (2 classes) foreign scholars/returning Singaporeans/DSA from other secondary schools starting Sec 3, which means the graduating Sec 4 batch is 500 strong. Not sure about RI (also 500?).

But from what I enquired several years back, the total JC 1 intake is about 1500, not sure if there's any change. This means there should be about 500 places for so-called 'outsiders' at JC 1. The best way to confirm this is to write to the school personally. They get back to you pretty fast from my experience.

Do you have any stats on the RGS O level HCL exams released recently? What % distinction?

      58.x% A1s and A2s.

      Thanks mjl and fatal illuxions!

Can I trouble both of you for another matter? My dd is in Sec 2 now and is getting nervous over the prospect of OBS next year, as she is not the outdoor-sy or sporty sort, and is only a beginner swimmer. Would appreciate if you could give a as detailed as possible outline of what happens roughly day to day, so that she can be mentally prepared. Better still, do either of you happen to have kept a copy of the itinerary?

One senior told her they spent 10 hours canoeing! Is this true? What about safety measures? Do they force all pupils through the obstacles? My dd has a fear of heights and I am very concerned about her safety on high obstacles. Do you know of anyone being excused because of this phobia or is a doctor's letter required?

Is there such a thing as 'non-residential' OBS? My dd heard an announcement a few days ago for theses pupils. Who qualifies for this category?

Thank you in advance for your help and advice. šŸ˜„

      Hi fatal illuxions,

Hope you're enjoying your JC life so far. Do you have any stats on the RGS O level HCL exams released recently? What % distinction? Mrs Hoo has yet to inform the school.

      Thanks! :celebrate:

do you have any idea about RGS so-called gep and non-gep class? i heard that class 109(or 110)-113 are gep classes.

Since 2 years ago, there is no more GEP and non-GEP class. Everyone in RGS goes through the same Raffles Programme which is a school based gifted programme. I think this is a good move, IMHO, to help curtail elitism.

The termination of GEP/non-GEP classes 2 years ago applies only to upper secondary pupils.

For lower secondary, the pupils are still grouped into so-called GEP (209/10-213) and non-GEP classes. The GEP classes consist of ex-GEPpers from primary school and PSLE high scorers from mainstream.

The rationale behind this practice (as divulged by the school when I enquired) is to allow the non-GEP pupils time to adapt and catch up on certain learning practices/skills which the GEPpers have been exposed to since P4. The segregation allows GEP classes to progress/be stretched at a faster speed and to a deeper level if desired. Although the cohort does largely the same worksheets, differentiated worksheets are given out to the high ability pupils for certain subjects.

By upper secondary, it is presumed that everyone has more or less caught up and are at the 'same level'.

      CoffeeCat:
I think red rose do not has any particular intention to mention the top class thingy. It could be like a \"just for your information\" thingy. It's just some enthusiastic person sharing what he/she heard.

Haha! I agree with CoffeeCat that Red Rose was just a very enthusiastic person sharing some information with those who may be interested.(Kay-pohs like me!!) She doesn't seem to have any 'bad' intentions and does not seem too concerned about which is the top class. She probably brought it up in response to another few forummers who were still harping about this subject of GEP classes.

Just to add to it, for fun only šŸ˜› , my dd's teachers, not 1 but a few, did mention that fact to the class too. Not sure why they brought it up. In fact, it is very common knowledge and a widely-accepted fact among the mainstream classes already. I'm surprised Turquoise hasn't heard about this.

I also have direct 'inside' information from the class in question, who apparently are reminded regularly by all their subject teachers that they are the 'best' and hence are expected to deliver accordingly. As for opportunities and privileges, it's better not to divulge too much here. Not convenient.

I'm sure all capable RGS pupils will be recognised and groomed as deemed fit by their respective teachers, so no point comparing. Parents have also been informed during briefings that the curriculum may be tweaked a little, depending on abilities and may vary from class to class. It's no big deal really!

Hope I haven't added fuel to the fire. All the best to your girls. Hope they've settled in nicely!

Hi! Can any kind soul enlighten me regarding 2 issues?

      1) Can 3rd language be used to substitute any of the 7 subjects or are there some subjects which have to be included no matter what ? Eg. can 3rd lang. replace MT ?

      2) For school-related activities, how or where can pupils obtain the activity card ? How many of these activities do they organise per year and what are some of them ?

Thanks and a blessed Lunar New Year to all of you ! :celebrate:

      tired mom:
My kid is also in P4 GEP. You mean the teachers are supposed to provide the rubrics with each task, if applicable? Or do we have to ask the teachers specifically for the rubrics? cause she definitely did not receive any. Maybe I should email the teachers to ask :?:

Also, thanks to 2ppaamm for sharing the rubrics with us. It's really a great help!
      :thankyou:
      Hi tired mum,

I'm not sure if giving out rubrics are 'compulsory' for each task but in my child's 3 years in GEP, they were dutifully handed out. Rubrics can be really helpful as it helps to guide the child along, especially if he/she has no clear idea of how to approach the task, which may be quite a common problem faced by many GEP kids. Many of the assignments are demanding and teachers' expectations high. No harm asking the teacher for the rubrics I suppose.

Tks for sharing with us 2ppaamm... Gosh, I din even noe there is an assessment rebrics available for the family tree project  ... er is there any assessment rubrics available for IVP projects? :?

      Hi cluelessmum,

Presumably, your child is in P4 GEP? There are assessment rubrics for every practically every project, assignment, presentation etc, if their marks are included in the final year computation. But you don't really have to worry as teachers will always provide the rubrics with each task and if your child follows the criteria set out closely, getting full marks is highly possible for high-quality pieces of work. Good luck and have fun with GEP !

      Cheers! šŸ˜„

      Hi ezmum,

I wrote my reply to wmd, assuming that all the names would be deleted. Didn't get the chance to see his edited version until much later as I had to rush off to attend to something more urgent. Thanks for pointing it out nevertheless. šŸ˜„
