    • RE: Branded Schools / Well-known Schools

      Thanks for your comments!

My kid isn’t in any enrichment classes except for swimming. We try to expose him to reading in Chinese and English by bringing him to the library.

Why I asked is because this is something that was told to me by a teacher friend and some parents who are already in the primary school system. That a lot of parents send to TLL and the kids are already taught prior to the lessons. The teachers find it harder to engage the kids in the lessons as almost 3/4 or more of the class already know the lessons, hence the kids get quite rowdy. The teachers end up catering to the masses that have already been taught and the minority students with no tuition tend to get left out during class time.

Its good that it doesn’t seem that way so far from the responses!

      Hi, Westie33 :

I read your message about Chinese Group Tuition Class for P5, at Blk 204 Opp Nan Hua Pri School. I am somehow keen to find out more details. Tried to send you message but it seems that your inbox is FULL ?

      Hi Angel288,

Sorry for the late reply. Was busy with work and CNY stuff. Anyway, in case you did not receive my PM, here are some of the info. to you & those who PM me (not sure if I hv replied all):

There should be enough students to start the P5 class starting next Thurs, 5-7pm (tbc by tutor) due to the responses received so far. Venue and fee as above. Lessons include preparing kids for their orals and compo not just paper 2. P6 class is running every Thurs, 2.30-4.30pm.

My friend is keen to send her child as the tutor was my child's ex tutor. My kid was struggling with CL and HCL in NHPS prior to joining the group tuition. Things changed since he joined the group tuition in P5 and he did very well for 2nd half of his P5, prelims and PSLE. For his group, out of 7 kids, 5 obtained distinction and the other 2 obtained As. All her other groups did very well (minimum A for CL) though I'm not sure of the numbers receiving distinctions. Most importantly, it's a joy to see my kid developing an interest in reading Chinese novels during his leisure time given the fact that his present sec school is SAP. Let's hope more can benefit from her teachings.

Anyway, if you are interested, you can sms her directly @ 9820 8854 (not advisable to call as she may be teaching). I hv obtained her permission as I dun frequent the forum or check my inbox that often. Hope above info is useful. Thanks.

hmm was reading through this, and seems like NHPS don't really have very good Chinese teacher if parents have to resort to a group tutor to improve their kids' grades? I thought NHPS supposed to be good in Chinese? Why still need parents and students to waste time and effort to sending their kid to another group tuition? Quite shocking...

    • RE: Branded Schools / Well-known Schools

I hear that MOE has transferred a lot of the teachers and principles from well known schools to neighbourhood schools in a bid to be more equal. If so, then is there still a need to go for a well known school?

I also hear that as parents who send to "well known" schools tend to be more focused on children’s studies, they will always get additional tuition from learning labs, berries etc to supplement. Hence, teachers who end up rotated to these well known schools just don’t really teach much and expect the kids to go to the tuition agencies to learn instead. End up, students are bored and don’t really bother learning in school.

I was thinking if I send my kid to a known school, I won’t have to send for tuition as I thought the teachers will be very on the ball.

Any one can share their experience?

    • RE: ACS (I)- Is it a rich man's school?

      My thoughts:

      1. How is your child like? Is he friendly sociable self-confident? These will help him fit in, even if he doesn’t have much common topics with the rest of the kids. Good at sports? - ACS also has a rich sports culture so your kids can still fit in. If he is the opposite of what i said, then do you think he will grow in such an environment to excel? or do you think he will feel miserable?

      2. How are the teachers like? sometimes, the pressure can come from teachers. With regards to donations, selling fun fair tickets. Some teachers are just sickeningly insensitive. They like to create "competition" to sell the tickets, or pressure the kids to sell.

      3. Which class do you think he will be in? Traditionally, if your kid ends up in those science classes - there will likely be more mix of rich and lower income kids who did well in school. For kids who do arts / econs, chances are hmm there are there coz they are from the primary schools, who regularly got in because of their alumni connections. note: this is just a generalization and with all generalization, it is based on stereotypes and likelihood.

What kind of updates are you looking for? When you say new principal, do you mean Mrs Ong who was appointed principal at the start of 2016?

    • RE: Where to Seek Help to Resolve Debt Problems?

Credit Singapore like what everyone says.

What i find helpful is to set out clearly what your debts are and their interest rates. (2) current cash amount (3) current cash flow - when you get your pay.

Once you get that in order i think Credit Singapore can help you achieve debt free tomorrow

    • RE: How much is enough for retirement in Singapore?

buying condo to rent in long term will still make sense. Why? because there is a strong push amongst younger generations not to stay with parents and have their own privacy. So there is an internal push and also external push. Expats still need to rent. We will still see more foreigners coming in/
