      Thanks.

Use area mapping. Put 1 into region when you add an area and take away 1 when you minus an area.
So if you add the quadrant area, and minus the Triangle, you'll find one shaded region with a 1 and the other shaded region with a -1, the unshaded region becomes 0. That is the difference between the shaded region.

Difference in area between two shaded part,
Area of Quadrant - Area of Triangle

      Area of Quadrant = Pi 10 X 10 = 100pi cm2
      Area of Triangle = 0.5 X 15 X 10 = 75 cm2

      Difference in area between two shaded part = 100pi =75 = 239 cm2

I would solve the above problem as follows :

Note that the difference in area between the 2 shaded part is the area of quadrant less area of right-angled triangle.
      2u ------- 10cm
      1u ------- 5cm
      3u ------- 15
      Area of quadrant ------- (1/4) x pi x 10 x 10 = 78.5 sq cm
      Area of triangle ------- (1/2) x 15 x 10 = 75 sq cm
      78.5 - 75 = 3.5

      Ans : 3.5 sq cm[/quote]

Q : The number of children increased by 15 to 35 at a party. What was the percentage increase in the number of children?

We are confused with the wording... increased by... increased to... what is the different?

      Thks.

When we ask what's the percentage increase or decrease, it is usually reference to the original number. The number that it began with.

      In this case,
      the original number is 20.
      It increase by 15.
      It increased to 35.

      Reference to original number 20, the percentage increase is (15/20) X 100 = 75%.
      So it increased by 75%.
