• RE: Unity Secondary School

      sembgal:
I heard from my friend that a group of concerned sec 1 parents are going to unity sec today to feedback about the long excessive hours spent on CCA. She shared that many parents are unhappy about it as they are concerned about their children's academic too. The poor children who have to stay back in school until very late afternoon and they have to go home do homework at night until late.

Juggling CCAs and studies is part and parcel of learning about responsibilities and how to manage one's time and priorities. We should learn to let go and allow the kids to grow.
Can any parent share what kind of teaching resources or materials does SST use? Does the school also use textbooks or school own notes? Hope some parents can share many thks!

When my son was in sec 1 and 2, he had chinese and maths textbooks. The rest of resources were found in the school google site or school notes. In sec 3 and 4, there are texbooks for most subjects in preparation for O level.

      Hi,
Can someone please advise what Sec 1 textbooks SST is using for English, Math and Science? I curious how they are different from that of say RI or NYGS.

      Thanks.
This year's sec 1s are using Shinglee's New Syllabus Maths, for Science the textbook is optional and no books for English. Anyway they don't use textbooks in lower sec except for MT. Most of the time notes and worksheets are given by the teachers.

I am also curious if any of the pioneer batch students managed to get into a JC via DSA.
Curious how School of Science and Technology performs for its inaugural batch taking the exam. Anyone has info?

They did well. There's a write-up in the ST today.

at bottom of page A6 of main section.

55% achieving at least 5 distinctions and 98% qualifying for JC. 100% qualify for poly.

hmm.... what is defined as a distinction? A1 & A2?

is their results really that good? any comparisons from other schools?
I saw Nan Hua's website show their % of 5 distinction and abv is 53%. Then again, their cohort is 400+ students.

Actually what do they mean by qualifying for JC? With 20pts also can get into a JC, right? (COP for Innova last year).

My girl just completed her o level in Unity, seem like overall unity result is not too good.

      Not too good compared to.....?

Apparently the principal told the school that they did quite well and it was one of the better scores. But I don't know the details. Maybe he says that every year so that the rest of students will work harder.

    • RE: How is your Sec 1 child coping in his new school?

Hi. Nice to know you all. I hv kids in P5, S1 & S3. Although I hv a S3 boy I still feel like a newbie when my girl enters S1 this year.

Lessons hv alrdy started this week and she’s grumbling abt them. I guess she’s having some adjustments issues or maybe still in holiday mood. She didn’t do any studying during sch hols because I thought she deserved a good break after the grueling exam prep. So now the engine is stone cold and will prob take a while to warm up.

      wonderm:
It is very interesting to see how differently we parents work with our kids.

For us, we never set any T-score target not because we think it will give them too much stress, but because even we parents do not know how to translate 270, 260 or 250 to actions. Since T-score is a ranking score, to us, it is meaningless for us to set a goal for them to be top 3% or top 10% of the national cohort. They wouldn't know how to be top x% of 40,000+ students. We also do not set any goals in terms of marks like above 90%, 80% or 70% because it really depends on how hard the papers are.. Since there is no way we can know or control how hard the teachers set the papers, I think it is unfair or not very useful for us to set such goals.

Instead, we monitor the children's learning attitude and also the type of mistakes they make. From the mistakes we can tell if they don't fully grasp the concepts or they are making too many careless mistakes, these need to be addressed as and when it happens, not till after the exam. If we sense they lack concentration or motivation during their revision, we will also give them feedback and make them understand they are studying for themselves. With these things addressed, we always re-assure them that the final result will take care of itself and whatever the T-score, it is good enough that they have worked hard and done their best.
I most certainly agree with you on this.
