    • RE: All About Autism

      Hi all

It has been a long time since I posted in this thread.
My eldest daughter, who has high functioning autism is now in secondary 2 .
She has been diagnosed since she was 5 yrs old.
She went through therapies at KKH since 5 yrs old, Now she is still seeing the doctor at KKH for her yearly review.
She is in main stream primary n secondary school, given great support from her school teachers and allied educator.
She went to normal academic stream, following her PSLE results release 2 yrs back.
But I am glad to say that she is now doing well in her stream, was granted opportunities to take express courses for maths n science, but she wanted to take things slow at her pace, so she rejected the opportunities.
I am very proud to say that , her secondary 2 Maths exam results was released yesterday and she scored 94 , the highest in her class!!!
I was super super happy and excited !
We were holding hands and jumping with joy when she told me her results!
She told me how her friends were cheering for her when the teacher announced to the class the highest score.I can see the joy and pride in her eyes.
It was a long and ardous journey through her academic years, with ups and downs.
It was a scary journey for both of us.
I have to let go of my fears, letting her go to her school camp, girl guides camp in secondary school.
But I witnessed how she over come her fears.
She even did her job as a tour guide at Garden by the Bay for her Girl guide duties!
I was very devastated when she was diagnosed with autism many years back.
But I told myself, if I were to give up, who is going to help her?
Step by step , slow and steady I kept reminding myself.
Every step taken by her is a mile stone.

I wish to tell all here, there is really light at the end of the tunnel.
Even though my daughter will sure encounter setbacks through out her academic years, and even when she goes to polytechnic et cin future, or to work.
But we will all get through this together! 😊

    • RE: Normal Academic (NA) course

      Hi all

My daughter just started secondary 1 last week.
She scored 181 for her PSLE and is in N(A) stream currently.
She was very disappointed when she gotten her PSLE results, saying that she thought she could do well to go to Express stream. I had hopes too for her, but I already prepared myself that she might need to spend an additional year in secondary school.
      A brief outline here:
My daughter has ASD, autism spectrum disorder. She was diagnosed since she was in kindergarten 1.
hers was high functioning autism, she had sensory issues, eg loud sounds and strong smells.
She went to main stream primary school, with excellent support from her school, teachers, allied educator and classmates.
In my heart, though I did wish that she can go to express stream in secondary school, but I was thankful that she made it through PSLE, with her condition.
She had come so far since her diagnosis.
I told her to give herself a big pat on her back too, she is going to secondary school after all, I told her to chin up, and continue studying hard like how she did in primary school.
I had a talk with a friend, whose son is always in Normal academic stream but going to secondary 2 this year.
Her son had a chance to choose between express and normal academic, but as her son was diagnosed with ADHD, she felt that the pacing in N(A) might be better for her son, and her fear was he might feel more humiliated if he was demoted from Express to N(A) if he was not able to cope with the express stream pace.
My daughter told me she will study extremely hard so that she can get promoted to express stream , I told her nono no need, just study hard, no need extremely hard, I wanted her to have a happy secondary school life. Secondary school life, I remember , was the fondest time of my studying life 😛
I didn’t enjoy JC and university that much, as I remembered I was struggling badly with my studies then.
I told her just continue to do her best, be it N(A) , as long as she does her best, I am very proud of her.
A few colleagues of mine actually came from N(A) background, but now are doing very well in my company.
I always take motivation from them and tell my girl and myself, never to give up!

    • RE: All About Autism

Hi Lavendery. My daughter is asd. Not asperger. She isn’t very good in languages. Just average in her English and Chinese. But she is actually quite good in math. I went to a complementary math workshop organized by her school few weeks back and had a chat with the founder of a math learning school. She actually told me kids with autism do excel in their work. It’s a matter of how they are taught. She has had students with autism scoring very good grades in psle. I actually sign my girl up for their holiday intensive program in March for a day as my girl told me she needs that extra boost in her math understanding. I also realized as my girl grew up she seems more persistent in wanting to excel in her work. If she has a problem sum she can’t solve once she gets the understanding she sits there and starts practising non-stop just to make sure she understands. She told me she needs to do well in her studies so that she can do well in her psle next year. I brought her for her kkh review 2 weeks back. The doc told me she showed great improvement. I asked her what isit in for my girl now as she goes into puberty and soon in sec school and so on. The doctor posed me this question if a frien doesn’t know your girl has autism does she find that she’s different?I told her not really. Cause my colleagues can’t tell she hasn’t autism tho my daughter goes to my office quite often during sch holis. Then doc told me that’s it. You don’t have to share her condition if you don’t want to . Even normal kids will be abit different from each other. And 2nd question I asked the doc. My girl still has certain fears like avoiding certain toilet in her school as it has very strong painting smell and scary pictures in it. Doc reply to me. Isit the only toilet in school?she can go to other toilets right??? the doc makes things so simplified …we can’t change them but we can make things change for them. She told me it’s a matter of going around things. Let’s all work hard for our kids. I am struggling now tho. She’s taking psle next year. Super worried. My ds2 is going p1 next year. He’s super lazy. Sigh. Told him his elder sis does homework wo complaints and he told me oh since she loves doing homework pass mine to her then. :X

Hi lavendery. Surprisingly my gal is coping quite well in mainstream pri sch. Seems like yest she just went into p1 but time flies so fast. She’s in p5 now and taking psle next year. I duno to cry anot cause it’s a huge jump from p4 to p5 work. Really sweat big time . Academically wise I will say she seems quite alright. She’s actually quite good in maths and in the 2nd best maths class. Ermm language wise she’s just average tho. She actually got the model pupil award last year during term 1 and gotten best progress award during her p4. Was quite surprised tho by her. In primary school teacher usually will give feedback over the sch app her maths teacher feedback last week that she’s coping well in class and seems very motivated and will help her classmates. I realized as she grows older she seems to mature a lot. She walks to school herself now. It’s a 15 minutes walk to sch. I started training her during the start of january for 2 weeks. She insisted on going school herself as she told me she needs to be prep for sec 1 2 years later.I teased her asking her I thought she commented that quite poor thing to go sch alone. But my heart aches tho cause her school bag is really big and heavy. She looks like a tortoise walking to school.I feel happy for her in my heart. What I thought not possible for her b4 she actually did it. I told a close friend whoever says my kid can’t do because of her condition I will tell them try us. Me and her together. My girl has a hobby now . She goes jogging weekly.

She can jog for 2.4km nonstop. She told me jogging relieves her stress. I guess that’s her way of coping when things get too overloaded for her.she has two younger siblings. The younger one is going p1 next year. My girl did tell me this ,"don’t tell me I need to carry didi bag for him to school next year. Oh no." My girl has her mood swings at times too. Just few days ago she gave me abit of attitude when I told her off for not checking her work.but was quite happy inside when she apologises next day over whatsapp telling me she wun do it again. Guess in life we win some we lose some. My girl has special needs. But it brought us closer. I know she been through a lot to get to p5. So next time whoever says our kids need try harder let’s tell them try us then.

      Hi lavendery,

I might be able to help you on this abit.
my daughter is 11 years old this year. she is still with KKH CDU for review.
we goes every 9-12 months for her review. she due for her review next Tuesday.
KKH CDU didn't discharge her. I won't allow them to discharge her too. hahaha. cause if anything happens or I really need assistance, touch wood touch wood, if they discharge her, I don't think they will help after that.

sigh now I having big problems with her mathematics problem sums. She is in mainstream P5 this year and her problem sums are driving me up the wall.
she has tuition once a week, so when she has those difficult problems sums in between, she n I can sit down and discuss the problem sums till around 11pm , but still no solutions. :stupid:
she told me\" Mummy, P5 mathematics oh my god!!! why isit so difficult????\" :gloomy:

      hello all:)

my girl still has her struggles and fears though ( she has sensory issues since young.we can't eat in hawker center and food courts when she was a kid as she will be so scared of the smells from there, luckily she is so much better now) but we are overcoming each hurdle together .. hehe
guess this is the only way I can give her support.
she just started her first tuition yesterday evening!.. hahaha
she told me after her tuition, the tutor explained the problem sums so clearly, I can understand it much better than when you are explaining to me :stupid: I knocking my head when she told me that. lol.
I feel that as they grow older, they will get much better.
I feel it from my girl. she can tell jokes now and even laughs at herself when she encounters funny situations.
I was telling her that day that she is putting on abit of her weight, her belly looks so round. then she told me this\" round is also a shape , I look quite cute being round. : 😓

we went universal studio during the December holiday with her 2 younger siblings.
she took the transformer ride and Jurassic park ride.
she was actually laughing and screaming during the ride.
she wanted to go up battle galactica ride but I told her, no!!!! ur mummy dun even dare to take.. next time when I braver then we wil take it together..hehe

      hiya all:)

it has been a long time since I posted here.
my eldest daughter is going into P5 just few days later:)
      she has high functioning autism.
and I am so happy to say that she actually got the model pupil award in her class this year and also best progress award in her class year end. she is in mainstream Primary school, and has a lot of support from her teachers and classmates, as well as allied educator in her school.
She even went for her overnight pri 4 camping trip few months back at sentosa .
I was quite worried about her, cant eat and sleep without her at home.. haha but she actually made it through and had a very good time. her teacher took pics of her with her friends and send it back to me via watsapp. the only complaint she has, the bathroom near the beach for bathing is so cold!!!!! hahaha.
my DD still has her struggles though, have to manage it together with her as she grows up.
she is going into puberty now. just had her first menses 3 months back, she was very cool about it tho. she had the first period in school and she actually beared it till she reached home, lol she told me she went toilet and stuff tissue paper into her undies . luckily we prepped her about it way beforehand. :censored:
DD is showing empathy too from what me and her teachers see in her behaviour.
her teacher wrote in her report book that
she continues to overcome her personal hurdles with determination, courage and a pinch of caution.
I was very happy with the sentence in her report book that wrote that \"she is the epitome of hard work, resilience and perseverance in class. She is an inspiration for the rest of the class to always strive for the better. \" was nearly crying when I saw that.
I was very proud when I see her on stage receiving her award for the best progress award. I clapped the loudest. hahaha. I feel that she has gone a long way from her kindy days till now.
let us all continue to perserve for our kids 🙂

      Hi ImMeeMee & Double E,

my girl at times will also \"give me nonsense\" , like when i send her to school in the morning, she will say i will prefer to go to the maingate not the side gate, because side gate got rubbish bin smell!!!
      sigh sigh.
have to take it with a laugh at times .
i brought my daughter to her paediatrician few days ago for her bad cough, and she was telling the paediatrician, i coughing nonstop, feel very suffering le!. i was 😓 😓 😓
then she put her arms on the table and against her head and ask the paediatrician , how many days of mc do you think i should get? 😓 😓 even more
she makes me laugh at times.
my daughter has a school mate, same P2 as her, but different class, i know his mum personally, he has the same condition as my daughter, so i click very well with his mum and gave each other support like, oh no!! today my son misbehave, then i will tell her yeah!! my daughter did that too! how how? lets discuss what should we do to help them.
haha at times its really joining forces together to think of ways to help our kids :snuggles:
