      Hi,

      A few questions to ask.

      1. For boys, do they apply scholarship during their J2 or during their NS before going to university?

      2. Can they apply more than one scholarship at the same time?

      3. Can they apply another scholarship if they have not been accepted by any sector since they have 2 yrs NS before entering university?

      3. Do they apply university after receiving A level result / during their time in NS?

      Thanks

For boys, they can apply for university and scholarships immediately after their results, and also while in NS. Some boys may change their mind over the 2 years in NS and reapply for different universities, courses and scholarships. All students can apply for more than 1 scholarship at a time, but I think they should not accept more than 1 scholarship at a time (they probably have to declare that they aren't getting any other scholarship when they accept one). Most scholarships don't require the student to already have a university place, but they may restrict the courses and universities that they will consider.

Just to add that certain (esp overseas) Uni offers would lapse after 1 year if not taken up, so for those Unis, applications would need to be made while in NS instead. Otherwise would hv to make applications twice.

    • RE: Send back domestic helper for home leave

You may wish to confirm with MOM directly on applicable regulations. From the MOM website advisory, it appears that any departure by FDW during this period would subject her to SHN & Covid test upon her return - https://www.mom.gov.sg/covid-19/advisory-to-fdws-and-employers

Just for info, there's a Facebook site that has transfer helpers listed, and where employers can also post requirements & direct hire: https://m.facebook.com/sg.helpers.direct/

There are several other Facebook sites that are (almost) similarly named, but operated by agencies, but above link is a closed group, that you have to request to join.

Fortunately MOM's online WP application platform is clear & simple to manoeuvre around that employers can save $$ & direct hire transfer helpers, without going through agencies.

I’m more wary of Iran, besides visitors fr SKorea & Japan. Iran’s death rate climbing at alarming rate.
Iran's fatality rate is now second to China's! Its deputy Health Minister just diagnosed with it after press conference!

If everyone gives in to the worst-case fears, hunkers down at home and refuses to work, then schools will close, transport will halt, shops will stay closed (even if they have food inside), power and water will stop running... and who will work in hospitals and clinics?
Well put! The calls for shut down of schools, businesses etc indeed have v wide implications. Economy & life comes to a standstill!? For how long?

Who then are deemed \"essential to have to go to work\" to keep life going to have supply of essentials (medical, food, utilities, transport etc) for everyone else? What about these personnel's family life and interactions with each other, there would be exposure too amongst themselves (important consideration too!!), eg. who cares / looks after these personnel's children, if school, childcare etc shuts down?

Personally I feel that it's in such times, that thinking beyond ourselves, exercising responsible behaviour, and doing what we can (no matter how small a gesture) for others and our community will go a long way to limit the spread of the virus & ensuring that everyone pulls through together.

It is heartening to see how some individuals and groups have taken their own steps to voluntarily distribute masks, disinfectant to others, set up disinfectant in public lifts for use, distribute food & drinks to frontline care workers etc. Each in their own way, helping others to go through this period.

Definitely more constructive and productive, for instance rather then some questioning why certain public figures are wearing masks, or putting down efforts made. More constructive suggestions and hands-on measures to help others, would be more appreciated and productive?

I don't think there are clear answers that fit everyone. Some kids take scholarships because there is no other way to go overseas. Some know quite clearly (or think they know) what career they want. Some don't mind spending 6 years serving a bond, just for the experience and exposure, on the way to something else. 6 years is really not that long given that working life now stretches to 67, and most people go through several jobs in a lifetime. And some decide that the bond is not worth the experience.

Of course, all this is predicated on the assumption that studying abroad is a good thing. I would say that it depends a lot on the personality of the child. Some will thrive; some will not. Not everyone is suited to living overseas at 18, and some may well prefer to live and study locally. As you mention, there are options in the local universities to study overseas for shorter periods.
Thanks for input! I guess in some instances, going abroad perhaps allows one to take up a course that locally not offered etc, and if on scholarship there's the opportunity to also take up a course purely on interest / passion, not having to consider too much whether it will have \"employability\" issues Vs if self-funded then there will be more considerations!

Would like to seek parents’ views on what considerations go into your child taking up an overseas scholarship.

Other than the prestige, the overseas education opportunity, job security, and of course the costs consideration (that it doesn’t have to be self-funded). Are there concerns that at 18 years old, the child has to be sure (committed) that that’s the course, path & vocation sought, to undertake to be bonded for at least 6 years?

It’s just that these days, local Universities have a range of study abroad options, and though perhaps not the same as actually studying & living abroad for 3-4 years in a prestigious overseas University, that at least is also an avenue to "study abroad" somewhat, instead of deciding to take up a bond so early on at 18 years old?

There are always personal considerations that go into it, so am just seeking views / opinions. Thank you.

Do the students put the uniform on a hanger and put the entire thing in the duffel bag or do handcarry the hanger (with the uniform hanging on it). That way it will not get crumpled.
      :thankyou:
Best to handcarry the hanger (with uniform).

Each student will later hang their respective hangers (previously was hung in classrooms along window grills).

Label your hangers or put hanger in labeled coat bag (can purchase from Daiso) or large handcarry plastic bag.

Is it also true that ESIS holders will not be awarded top 10% scholarship?
There's different criteria for the award of ESIS (Sec 1) & ESIS (Yearly) - probably to ensure that there's no \"duplication\" & that more (different) students are eligible as they progress thru secondary school.
