lemonthree:Hi, was confused by the changes in the chinese syllabus..
I thought MOE'S focusing on HYPY?
But schools stop emphasing it after term 2 is it?
So will it affect the child if HYPY'S lousy, as in for PSLE?
Do they still have specific character list that they die die must know one?
If so, can anyone please tell me so i can start drilling?..
Also, are there any good methods to teach children chinese?
She absolutely wouldnt speak chinese..
Relies on HYPY but cant recognise the characters/meaning...
Help help please!
Hi lemontree,
HYPY can be used to learn Chinese but it is not Chinese. In the way that phonics is to the English language.
the syllabus for P1 is start term 1 and 2 with HYPY. they have to intrudce Chinese characters after.
i see different phases in learning Chinese. This is how i had approached it with my dd who is now in P1.
Phase 1 - HYPY and Chinese Radicals (bi hua), conversation
for HYPY, practice often by getting the kid to verbalise the word through HYPY. There are CD from popular you can buy to get the multiple practises. some enrichment/ kindy actually started preparing kids on HYPY for K2, Better to give your child a head start.
For Chinese radicals, there are also workbook on bi hua but i find mos useful to get my dd to write chinese chracters, by providing her the order. after a while, she gets the hang of the rules and orders of the different strokes.
I find that languages are best learn when there are plenty of listening.
Talk to the child about different theme, topics in chinese...
Phase 2 - word recognition
Create word cards for common words, you can create collections of words dfferent themes There is also a good workbook in popular book store on Chinese high frequency words
Phase 3 - recognising phrase (chracters added together to form phrases)In term 3 onwards in P1, the emphasis will shift to word recognise. this is where more reading comes in... read alongside the child and help to single different common phrases...
Talk to the kid on diferemt topics, take a picture from book, or newpaper, talk about the settng, what happen, etc
Sometime, a single character can be part of different phrases...
Phase 4 - sentences
Practices order of words in the sentence. If the child reads or speaks regularly, it help them to get these rights. there are also workbook on this.
Phase 5 - comprehesion
This comes with more word recognistion and increase vocan, i can't emphasize more the importance of reading
Phase 6 - compo
i am still tryiing to work on that. and may probably need some external help towards later part of P1 only.
I started working my DD on HYPY as early as mid last year. it took her 6 months to master it well. My DD now can read passages on her own as long as there are HYPY. it also help to build her confidence. so, i would advocate that you invest more effort on HYPY, don't just rely on the school.
And because of the more regular readng and conversations, she can recognise more words, improve her vocab and can now recognise more phrases.
I also find that readng short passages aloud help to build confidence in speaking. there are nice little books on nursery rhyme or even chinese poems (tangshi) which are quite fun to recite.
She actually enjoys the language now... 8 months after i started drilling her on HYPY.
Some of the phases overlap and are concurrent.
this strtucre has worked for me...
i hope it's useful.
