      The difference between two numbers is 70. 3/5 of the larger number is two times that of the smaller number. What is the smaller number?

      TIA

      Nebbermind:
      DaddyD:

      4/7 of the pupils in a class were boys. 1/3 of the boys wore spectacles and 1/2 of the girls wore spectacles.

      A) what fraction of the pupils in the class wore spectacles?
      B) 9 girls in the class wore spectacles. After 4 boys who wore spectacles left the class, what fraction of the pupils in the class were girls? Express your answer in the simplest fraction.

      TIA!

      Class = 21U
      Boys = 4/7 of 21U = 12U
      Boys w specs = 1/3 of 12U = 4U

      Girls = 21U - 12U = 9U
      Girls w specs = 1/2 of 9U = 4.5U

      Children with specs = 4U + 4.5U = 8.5U
      Fraction = 8.5U/21U = 17/42

      If 4.5U = 9, then U = 2
      => 21U = 42
      Girls = 12U = 24
      After 4 boys left the class, fraction of girls = 24/38 = 12/19

      Sorry a bit lost on part B.
      Girls= 12U=24? Derived from where?
      Since above Girls= 21U-12U=9U
      The 4 boys left... Goes into which part of the equation?
      TIA

      How to do this?

      I can solve by guess and check method.
      Able to do in other methods? E.g. Assumption method?
      TIA.
