      Hello,
NUSH has been DSโ€™ dream school and he received his CO.
While waiting for curriculum briefing in October, can I ask some trivial questions:
      1. Is laptop allowed in class? Wifi?
      2. For schoolwork, any recommended spec?
      3. Weโ€™re staying quite far from school so I wonder if the above mentioned olympiad training, is it done during curriculum time or after school hours?
      Thank you so much.
      1. Yes, laptop is allowed and yes, there is wifi provided
      2. The notes provided by school is more than enough
      3. Olympiads are enrichment modules, so they are in the timetable if you enrol or get selected for them, usually max no of olympiads you can take is 2 as there are only 2 available slots in the timetable for them but there are always students who took > 2, especially those under Independent Study (that is, you \"study\" on your own and take the same quizzes/tests/exams as those who are in the olympiad classes)

As for Year 5 olympiads (olympiad training is up to Year 5), PO is usually conducted at night from 7 till 10.30 pm but not to worry as the students will be in Boarding anyway. By Year 5, usually each student will end up with only 1 olympiad although there will always be 1 or 2 students who will have 2. However, these students who have 2 will have to choose 1 between the 2 if they are selected for International Olympiads.

Hi, the NUSH Principal has shared that some Yr5 student, if selected, may attend NUS, NTU and SIT Yr1 module.
      :imcool: :imcool: :imcool: :imcool:

Is there any student that like to share your amazing achievement?
Is there any exceptional preparation you have made prior to admission to this schoool?
      Thanks for sharing

Most students will qualify for NUS modules when they are in Year 6 as most of the Year 5 and Year 6 modules will satisfy the prerequisite for NUS modules. Those students who accelerate will get to start their NUS modules before Year 5/6 since they meet the prerequisites earlier. There were students who read NUS Year 3 modules before they graduated from NUSH.

The school will auto inform students who satisfy the prerequisite via email and the students have a choice to apply or not.

Those who get a min of grade A- will be awarded DSA Star Award which will cover the NUS tuition fee and will be refunded the next NUS semester.

Hi all, I will like to ask how many electives is too much for the average student. Also, what subjects can be accelerated? Thanks for answering.
The max you can take is up to 2 as the time table permits max 2 electives time slot, although there are students who \"apply\" for Independent Study to take more. So I would say 2 is just nice.

Common subjects for acceleration are Math (diagnostic tests usually taken before you join NUSH), CS, Chem (usually 4 per cohort) & Physics (limited few). The latter 2 are usually by teacher recommendations for those with consistent results.

Looks like 8 to 6pm school life.

It all depends on what the kids want, if doing 1 day CCA, donโ€™t take electives and pull out ... basically Monday will be 4pm, Tuesday 1:30pm, Wed 6pm, Thurs 1:30pm and Fri 6pm. I believe most secondary school are longer than this, as some even compulsory 2 CCAs ...

Yes, it depends a lot on what you want to do and what you want to achieve.

Basically, Year 1 and 2 are manageable.

Year 3 and 4 will be busier, especially you take electives or enrichment modules (but these are not compulsory) or if you are more involved in your CCA/Interest Groups/CIP, competitions, research, etc ....

Year 5 is usually the busiest, if you are in leadership role for your CCA, Interest Groups and take multiple Olympiads or ARP/research projects or honours modules or CIP/VIA. Your day may end 8 pm to 10 pm as Year 5 Olympiads are conducted after school hours.

Nevertheless, if you do not take any enrichment/electives, honours, CCA/IG leadership roles or olympiads and assuming you clear your HCL by Year 4, basically, you have an \"empty\" timetable for the whole week except for the core subjects and here is the time for you to enjoy your school life, making friends, going on overseas trips, etc before you graduate while your peers in other schools are busy preparing for their A Levels. ๐Ÿ˜„

Even though the timetable is very packed, but she is coping well.

If you miss any lesson, the Teachers are willing to do make up lesson for you. 1 to 1 make up lesson.
This is especially true if you are participating in overseas competitions, student exchange programmes or attachments, etc, in which you will be missing lessons for at least a week or more and the students have been doing well despite that.

Donโ€™t worry, myrick88. The Teachers will always be there to help you if you really need help.

The teachers are helpful, students could just book a time with the teacher to clarify any questions that they have (a bit like university type that you book time slot with your tutor). In addition, the seniors are very helpful, there were free \"tuitions\" setup by seniors (they even prepared notes and questions) for the juniors before mid year assessments, they just have to sign up in the systems and all are welcome to join. And before the sessions, the senior will collect all the questions that you have or topics that helps are needed.

In addition, the house system help the junior to know a lot of seniors and their phone number, getting to know a few year 6 seniors are very helpful too. Y5 is the toughest, seems like the Y6 seniors have times to help their juniors and are always willing to help (no A level exam to prepare ๐Ÿ˜‚ )

That is what we like most from what we see so far ... there could be competition, but they are all very healthy, and everyone seems to be very willing to help everyone ... it is like a big family. Although some may be quite nerdy :imcool: but imagine when the Y6 seniors bring the Y1 juniors to University Town for lunch (yes, the only let down is the canteen) :rotflmao:

Yes, the seniors are extremely helpful ! They share notes and tips with the juniors and even conduct extra olympiad trainings with lecture notes prepared by themselves during \"olympiad seasons\" to help juniors do well in the competitions, despite having very hectic schedules themselves !

The alumni will also be back to help train the upper year students for Singapore/International Olympiads, as well as conduct universities/scholarships application/choice sharing sessions.

The school cohort is small but closely knit. ๐Ÿ˜„

Yes, my elder Daughter is in NUS high Year 1. All the Teachers are very helpful. They will have remedial class for those who are not doing well in the test, Well prepare them to go for exam.
There is a session of PTM per semester and there will be compulsory PTM if the child is not doing well whereby the teachers will meet up with parents to discuss how to help the child, so no worries.

NUSH wasn't our (parents') choice but my boy insisted that there's where he wanted to go. IMHO, that was the best decision he ever made!
Same here, the best decision ever and it's OUR 1st choice (parents & kid) :celebrate:

But when came to CO, if all 3 gave out CO, most GEP kids will choose for which?
DS year, 10+ went to RI, 10+ NUSH and the rest between RGS, HCI, NYGH, out of class size of 23. Boys will usually DSA HCI, NUSH, RI, girls NYGH, NUSH, RGS ...

This is something else i wanted to ask from all the experienced people here... Have heard many people who get selected in NUS, leave it for Raffles? Do u think Raffles is better than NUS? In what sense ?
I don't think it's a matter of which school is better.

Rather, it's a matter of which school suits the child more and whether the child will thrive in that school.

In any case, both schools are great schools. ๐Ÿ˜„
