Many centres that I enquire with mainly do O level.

      Thanks all in advance.

my DD1 has always been very chatty, active, playful... like any normal kids
but once she goes to sch, she will remain slient for as long as she's there...
even while playing, she has no problem sharing things with her classmates but not talking at all.. when her classmates talks to her, she doesnt reply..

we always think that she hasnt warm up to the place as such been encouraging her to speak up and we have been waiting to see improvement.. but as time files, her teachers, we as parents are worried if there's anything wrong somewhere..

People who know her situations always tell us to seek professional help as
they keep saying she is autistic but we know she is not..

today i manage to google some info which happen to let me come across an article about selective mutism that seems to be describing my ger is..
I further read it up at wikipedia..

for those who wish to read the link is
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_mutism

I wonder if there's any mummies who have similar experience so that I can learn more or if not any mummies know of any professional that we can seek help from..

Thanks for reading the long post.

it has been 8 years since my first posting on this topic.
apologises to those who have PM-ed me but didn't get a reply from me.

      to update on DD1 status

We brought her to see a psychologist or speech therapist (can't recall exactly as it's so long ago) but it was not as helpful as we had thought.

During the sessions, drawings and games were used to \"open\" her up and also as a way for them to understand her thoughts etc. Eventually we stopped going after a few sessions as we don't see any improvement at all. We just stopped and see how it goes at that point of time.

At that time, the situation was quite bad that the teachers in kindergarten suggested to getting a psychologist to come to the class and monitor her behaviour etc. But when she was in K2, there was a very patient teacher who really took extra care on her and eventually she made my girl open up.

Although it is a really slow process, she eventually get better when she went to Pri sch. She is now a very talkative girl.

I can't see you having much choice. It's best that you buy a book and start learning maths heuristic this coming months so that you guide her.
Onsponge also provide detail working for their workbook so that's also a good investment.
Review her exam papers n determine which topics she's weak in and start working on them during the coming holidays. Sometimes it's as simple as not knowing what the questions are asking for.
      Thanks Nebbermind.

I'll go and take a look at Onsponge website.

      Can recommend good laptop brands?
Personally using Apple MacBook Air for few years already
Although a bit pricey, it's quite lasting. I feel it's user friendly too.
Used to use Acer and Dell but after changing to apple's so far no regret.

Maybe can set a budget first, then from there shortlist a few brand or models for comparison?

The practise with exam papers can come later. For now, need to diagnose the reasons for her drop in performance (note: a lot of students experience this when they move fr P4 to P5, so don't be alarmed).
Does she have major areas of weakness (e.g. word problems, model drawing, fractions etc)? Or not enough time to complete? Or too careless and throw away marks?
A tutor will be able to help pinpoint the problem and gradually get her back on track. Understand very well tat some kids prefer group tuition to 1-to-1 (my DD is juz like tat too), but in group tuition the student has to be a bit more pro-active to ask the tutor about things that she isn't sure about, otherwise it will be difficult for the tutor to pay special attention to any individual student. We had good experience with the 2 big-name group tuition centres (the learning one n the stretching one, hehe), so perhaps u can consider tat. 😄
Major weakness i observe is in fractions, those questions like twice or x more than or x less than type, decimals and percentage.. especially the paper 2 problem sums.
I tried to learn so that I can explain but I find it too difficult for my brain to process :lightrod:
Ask her to try to seek help with her teacher. Hope that her teacher can help her at least a bit

the learning one -> out of our budget
the stretching one -> going to take a look and see how this goes

      Thanks!

      hello parents,

      wanted to seek some advice…
DD is P5 this year next year will be PSLE

When in P4 she was still doing ok for her Math but this year P5 drop drastically…
We intend to hire a private tutor for her as we really can’t guide her in Math. She refused but willing to go for group tuition instead. I feel that group tuition can’t address her weakness but this seems the only other alternative at this point of time.

I’m thinking other than going for group tuition, maybe can let her do those exam papers.
but will it useful or helpful to her in any way as we won’t be able to explain those questions (paper 2 problem sums especially) that she cannot do since we also can’t do the questions as well.

I can source for the answer online but if i can’t explain to her on the concept, i’m not sure if doing those past years exam papers will help her or not.

      TIA

      hello,

I'm looking at cedar's website for CCA schedule but unable to find Social Innovation.
Anyone has any idea which day is it normally held on?

      Thanks in advance!

social innovation isn't a cca in cedar. it's more of a niche area in which the school takes pride of

      thanks for the information!
